HESSTON — The Hesston College men’s basketball team needed a hard-nosed, physical performance throughout, edging the Bethel College junior varsity 53-50 Tuesday at the Yost Center in Hesston.
The Larks spent much of the game falling behind before playing catch-up. The Larks took the lead for the final time with 1:06 remaining on a Devin Lloyd driving layup, holding the Threshers off the rest of the way.
“Bethel offensively, played well, and I thought we played so poor defensively,” Hesston coach Dustin Galyon said. “Bethel played hard. Our big guys didn’t always finish. Rickey Vick had a nice game for us. He was injured, but he came out and played well. Down the stretch, we got some easy buckets. I was proud of our kids that we executed down the stretch.”
“We played pretty well to a point,” Bethel coach Alonzo Jamison said. “The guys know they still have a long way to go. Sometimes we rushsed the ball.”
Bethel was just six of 12 from the free throw line.
“Even the varsity has been spotty from the free throw line this year,” Jamison said. “The only thing we can do is keep shooting them. It’s hard to emulate in practice what it’s like in a game.”
Chas Clemens led Hesston with 15 points, followed by Ricky Vick with 12 and Alex Roth with 11.
Ryan Cummins was Bethel’s only player in double figures, scoring 10. Only one of the eight Bethel players dressed scored less than three points.
Bethel jumped out 11-3, but Hesston replied with an 11-2 run of its own. Hesston led by five down the stretch, but Bethel ended the half on a 5-0 run to tie the game 27-27.
Bethel jumped out to a 31-29 lead, but gave up an 8-2 run. Bethel regained the lead on a Wright layup with 10:27 remaining. Bethel led by as many as six. Hesston replied with three of four free throws to spark a 5-0 run. Vick hit a pair of free throws with 4:16 remaining to tie the game. Vincente Sorrells gave Hesston the lead, 50-49, with a putback with 2:31 remaining.
Eric Regier hit one of two free throws with 1:29 to play to tie the game. Lloyd answered with a layup for Hesston.
After trading turnovers, Roth was fouled with 3.1 seconds remaining. Roth hit the first and missed the second. A half-court shot for Bethel fell short.
“(Turnovers) really hurt us,” Jamison said. “We took care of the ball pretty well during the game, but when the game was on the line, we gave it up a couple of times.”
Bethel returns to action in December to open KCAC play.
“When we get to conference play, that’s when we’ll really take off,” Jamison said.
Hesston opens play in the American Family Insurance Thanksgiving Classic at 8 p.m. Friday against Northern Oklahoma-Enid, followed by Labette County Community College at 8 p.m. Saturday.
“Northern Oklahoma is probably the best team we’ll play this season, and that includes Barton and Seward,” Galyon said. “That’s saying a lot. Then we play Labette. I have been so pleased with our crowds. They have come out every night. They have been so awesome. I am so excited about having our tournament this weekend.”
