It came down to defense and extra points for the Quinter Bulldogs in the Eight-Man Division I Championship game Saturday at Fischer Field.
The Bulldogs made one more extra point than the defending champion Baileyville B&B Falcons, along with more defensive stops, to claim a 28-26 win.
The win brings Quinter its third title.
“We played really well,” Quinter receiver-defensive back Matt Bird said. “They had a great defensive line. They were big up front. We just stayed behind our big guys.”
Brady Reed rushed for three touchdowns and a pair of two-point conversions. Quinter was two for four on PAT attempts while B&B was just one of four.
“We knew in the second half, we had to get those extra points,” Reed said. “We knew that would be the difference in the game. The defense played awesome today. We won it with our defense. They say defense wins championships. That’s what won it today.”
Reed finished with 27 yards rushing and 42 yards passing. Jordan Hargitt rushed for 111 yards. Logan Reed rushed for 72 yards with a touchdown.
Baileyville was led by quarterback Kyle Haverkamp, who passed for 54 yards and rushed for 149 yards. Haverkamp rushed for a touchdown and passed for two more. Ryan Huerter rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown.
Each team posted a defensive stop to open the game. The rest of the first half belonged to the offenses until Quinter stopped a Haverkamp quarterback sneak inside the Quinter 1 with 34.7 seconds remaining, keeping the Bulldogs up 20-14. A bobbled snap on the play helped keep B&B out of the endzone.
Baileyville needed just two plays to open the third quarter to tie the game, a 43-yard Cody Heimann run, followed by a two-yard Ryan Huerter run.
Quinter came back with a one-yard touchdown run on fourth down when Brady Reed jumped up, threw his arms forward and broke the goaline with the ball.
“It was a 30 dive, but I switched it up at the line to a QB sneak,” Reed said. “I just knew we were really close there. I just tried to get it across the line. I was able to do it.”
Baileyville came back with a defensive stop of its own, scoring on the first play of the fourth quarter on a three-yard pass from Haverkamp to Heiman, to cap a 78-yard drive. B&B missed the PAT pass, keeping Quinter up by two.
The first turnover of the game came with 6:23 remaining in regulation when Jordan Hargitt stripped Haverkamp of the ball and returned it to the B&B 11.
The Falcons used a pair of sacks to get the ball back, but gave up an interception on fourth down with 2:25 remaining. Baileyville made one more drive to the Quinter 20, but Bird intercepted a pass with 17.1 seconds remaining.
“They were running out of time, so I knew they would try for the sidelines or the deep corner,” Bird said. “I saw it coming, I made the read. He threw it a bit inside and I got it. We’ve been working so hard all year long. We knew this was the drive and we needed to stop them.”
