TOPEKA —

The Newton High School girls’ soccer team ended the season with a 5-0 loss to Topeka Seaman Tuesday in the semifinals of the Class 5-4-3-2-1A Central I regionals in Topeka.

“Seaman was a very skilled team,” Newton coach Galen Anderson said. “Other than Maize, they were the most complete team we faced all year. They moved the ball around the field so well. We did our best, but to be honest, there was no question who was the better team tonight. They played very well and deserved to win. Once again we had trouble generating offense. This was our fourth game in six days, and we just didn’t have the legs to get behind their defense.”

Seaman, 13-2-1, advances to the finals today against Topeka Hayden.

Newton ends the season 7-11, winning four of its last six games. The Railers lose six seniors off the varsity roster.

“There is no doubt we made a lot of improvement over the course of the season,” Anderson said. “We lose Mallory (Eddy), Julia (Lara), Melissa (Volk), Kristin (Unruh) and Lindsey (Koland). They have been a big part of our team over the past four seasons. On the bright side, we have a lot of quality sophomores and juniors who played a lot of varsity this year. We will return seven or eight starters, so the cupboard’s not bare. These young ladies were awesome to work with all year, and I look forward to seeing how much we can improve next season.”
