Newton wrestlers claim freestyle, Greco-Roman titles

JUNCTION CITY —

Twelve members of the Newton Kids Wrestling Club competed at the Kansas USA Wrestling freestyle and Greco-Roman championships Saturday in Junction City.

Both tournaments were held the same day, beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at 9 p.m.

Logan Treaster and Jered Langley both won the “triple crown” of youth wrestling, winning the Kansas Kids state tournament as well as the freestyle and Greco-Roman titles.

Treaster wrestled at the 60-pound class in the midget division, winning six matches. In the finals of the freestyle tournament, he faced Antonio Ruiz of Junction City. Treaster won the first period 3-0. In the second period, Treaster was tied 1-1 with 17 seconds left and was down in the tie-breaker. Treaster scored a two-point exposure to win the period 3-1 and the match.

In the 140-pound class of the novice division, Langley won a best-of-three match series against Brix Brickey of Smoky Valley 2-0 in Greco-Roman and 2-1 in freestyle.

Also winning titles for Newton were Dillon Archer and Rylan Dalke. Archer won the 160-pound class in the schoolboy division, winning a best-of-three series against Riley Denny of the Caney Wardogs 2-1 for the freestyle title.

Dalke won the 130-pound class of the Greco-Roman tournament, winning all three matches by technical fall.

Wyatt Hendrickson and Miles Johns each claimed second-place finishes in freestyle competition.

Also competing for Newton were Quinton Harrison, Ezekiel Clardy, Nathan Murphy and Jeryl Murphy.

The next tournament for Newton is the Southern Plains Regionals June 12 to 14 in Hays.
