Wildcats claim SO
bowling medals

OVERLAND PARK — The Harvey County Wildcats Special Olympics team competed at the state bowling tournament Saturday in Overland Park, claiming two gold and three silver medals.
Golds went to Ricky Fryhover and Gill McCoskey. Silvers went to Brandy Pritchett, Brian Stauffer and Jamie Welfelt.
“Ricky had a really good series,” Wildcats coach Karla Stauffer said. “He beat his average. Also Brandy and Jamie made great gains throughout the entire season.”
The Wildcats begin the basketball season in January.

Newton Panthers
open season 2-2

The Newton Home School Panthers opened the season with a 2-2 record.
At a tournament in Wichita, the Panthers fell to the Wichita Warriors 45-44. Ryan Kleiwer led the Panthers with 16 points, followed by Lyndon Busenitz with 10.
The Panthers beat the South Central Wildcats 53-35. Kleiwer scored 17 points, followed by Caleb Ostrander with 13 and Ethan Oller with 11.
The Panthers lost to the Northfield School of the Liberal Arts 64-42. Kliewer scored 18 points, followed by Ostranded with 10 and Lyndon Busenitz with nin.
Friday, Newton downed the Ponca City, Okla., Saints 59-53. Ostrander scored 21 points, followed by Kliewer with 13 and Busenitz with 10.

Runners compete
at NAIA nationals

VANCOUVER, Wash. — Andrew Topham of Peabody, a junior at Southwestern College, placed 36th at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Cross Counrtry Championships Saturday at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.
Topham finished the race in 25:58. Southwestern finished in 26th out of 32 teams.
In the women’s race, Tabor senior Christine Addison finished in 194th out of 330 runners in 20:34. Addison was an individual qualifier.

Games canceled
against Ark City

The Newton High School freshman girls’ games Feb. 9 and 26 against Arkansas City have been canceled.

Winter competes
at Purdue meet

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Newton High School graduate Brittany Winter, a freshman swimmer at Missouri State, competed in three events Friday through Sunday at the Purdue Invitational.
Winter placed 46th in the women’s 200-yard individual medley in 2:19.15. She placed 37th in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.44. She placed 26th in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:17.13, missing the C finals by two spots.
Missouri State finished sixth in the meet behind Michigan, Louisville, Arkansas, Purdue and Ohio State.

Local golfers
second in tourney

The team of Mike Tate, Swede Osbourn, Mark Loeffler and Brett Loeffler took second at the four-man Turkey Scramble benefiting Meals on Wheels with a 16-under par 56.
Brett Loeffler won a turkey for being closest to the pin on hole 7.
The tournament drew 23 teams for 92 golfers.

WSU to honor
Smithson era

WICHITA — Wichita State will honor the Gene Smithson era Jan. 3 when the WSU men’s basketball team hosts Bradley.
The Shockers will wear retro “MTXE” jerseys at the game. There will be a silent auction for the jerseys. Smithson and his players will be honored at halftime.
A dinner party in the Champions Club will follow the game. Expected to attend the dinner are former players Cliff Levingston, Xavier McDaniel and Lynbert “Cheese” Johnson.

Thunder drops pair
of weekend games

TULSA, Okla. — The Wichita Thunder dropped a pair of games over the weekend, falling to Tulsa 4-3 in a shootout at the Kansas Coliseum, and losing to the Oilers again 4-2 Sunday in the BOK Center in Tulsa.
In Saturday’s game, Mark Adamek scored a pair of power play goals for Wichita just 14 seconds apart to give the Thunder a 3-2 lead. Brandon Keleniecki scored a short-handed goal for Wichita.
Glen Detulleo had two assists. Jon Horrell returned to the goal for the first time this season with Wichita, postinh 36 saves.
Tulsa tied the game with a goal with 1:19 remaining in regulation and won the shootout 2-0. Jim Jorgensen and Joel Hanson each had a goal for Wichita. Scott Campbell had 23 saves.
Wichita hosts Rapid City at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday at the Kansas Coliseum.
