HAYS — Despite a record-breaking performance from Burrton High School’s Alex Santiago, the Chargers could not come out with a victory, losing 85-66 to Hanover Tuesday night in a Class 1A state tournament quarterfinal at Gross Memorial Coliseum.
Santiago’s 53-point game breaks Brewster’s Josh Reid’s Class 14-year-old 1A state tourney record of 47 points.
“I am very honored that I could come out here, and perform that way at state,” Santiago said. “I’d much rather have the win. I rather give up the 53-points to get the win and move on to another round of state.”
Santiago, a senior playing his final high school game, entered halftime with a game-high 17 points, but exploded in the second half.
“We knew going in, he was one of the best players we would ever play, and he really showed it tonight,” Hanover head coach Kim Lohse said. “He shot the ball well and drove well and he even passed well.”
Santiago was more than just a scorer, picking up a double-double with 10 rebounds.
In the second half, Santiago shot 57 percent from the floor and 57 percent from behind the arc, making four 3-point field goals.
“I was just feeling the touch,” Santiago said. “First appearance at state, you are kind of (nervous), but second half I came out relaxed. … I was thinking walking back out here to the court to warm up, ‘Last game, give it your all, go all out.’”
Of Burrton’s 45 second-half points, Santiago scored 36.
The loss marks the Chargers’ first loss in their last 12 games and they end their season with a 21-5 record.
“These kids played so hard all year,” Burrton coach Ralph Butler said. “We are not very big, we are not very deep. They have just played so hard to get here and to lose in the first round, it hurts, but I am still awful proud of these kids.”
Hanover has lost only once all season to Baileyville B&B, which also is in this year’s tourney, and is 25-1.
While the Chargers received most of its offense from one player, the Wildcats had a more balanced attack with four players reaching double figures. Brady Buna and Taylor Nicholson each scored 15, while Jerod Diederich had 13 and Trevor Jueneman put up 12.
Hanover had no trouble getting its offense started, going on a 15-5 run to start the game.
Burrton would get within 10 points to end the first quarter, but things did not go much better in the second quarter.
Three minutes into the second quarter, Charles Alexander had a slam dunk to put the score at 32-14.
Burrton would find some offense going on a 5-0 run and Santiago would hit a 3-pointer with just under four minutes before half.
Burrton was not the only team that could hit the trey, as Hanover’s Taylor Nicholson would nail one to put the Wildcats up 39-20 with two minutes remaining in the first half.
Burrton would walk into the locker room facing a 44-21 deficit.
Burrton was outscored in every quarter but the fourth.
