Hesston doubles team reaches semis

PRAIRIE VILLAGE — The Hesston High School doubles team of Brett Liechty and Alex Roth reached the semifinals of the Class 4A state tennis tournament, following a pair of wins Friday at the Harmon Park Tennis Center.

Liechty and Roth opened with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Brett Cruse and Austin Cliff of Parsons. In the quarterfinals, Liechty and Roth beat Nic Baker and Ben Malotte of Marysville 6-0, 6-0.

The team of Connor Dyck and Joel Boettger opened with a 6-2, 6-7, 6-2 loss to Shane Ferguson and Omar Elshabassy of Independence in the first round. In consolation play, they beat Nathan Krause and A.J. Vonlehe of Russell 6-0, 6-2, but lost to Zack Hanks and J.T. Peterson of Topeka Hayden 9-6.

In singles play for the Swathers, Taylor Nebel opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ryan Schmidt of Buhler 6-0, 6-0. In the quarterfinals, Nebel lost to Matt Edwards of DeSoto 6-3, 7-5. In consolation play, Nebel lost to Taylor Smith of Hayden 9-7.
