Newton trails Salina by one-half game

The Newton Rebels split six games during recent play.
Saturday at Lindsborg, Newton downed the host Knights 2-1 in the first game. Kyle Cremers went seven innings for the win, allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts. Michael Faul went two for three hitting, posting the game-winning RBI.
In the nightcap, Lindsborg won 6-4. Lucas Fornelli took the loss despite allowing just one earned run in five innings.
Sunday in Newton, the Rebels lost the first game 3-2. Alex Laabs took the loss, allowing three runs in seven innings. Andrew Revall and Jamell Cervantes each went two for three hitting with a double. Cervantes had an RBI.
Newton rebounded to win the second game 6-0. Taylor Roy went the distance for the win, striking out eight and allowing just three hits. Ben Kozma and Brad Salsman each went two for three. Kozma drove in two runs.
Monday in Salina, Newton won the first game 8-3 and lost the second game 4-2.
Salina is 12-11 in Walter Johnson League play to lead the North Division. Newton is second at 11-11. The games were a make-up of a previously rained out doubleheader.
Results of Tuesday’s games have not been received at press time.
Newton plays at 6 p.m. Thursday at Valley Center.
