The Newton High School boys’ basketball team gave the Derby Panthers all they could handle for three quarters, falling in the fourth to drop a 69-54 decision Tuesday at Ravenscroft Gym.
Newton was outscored 19-6 in the fourth quarter to break open a two-point game.
“We went from playing two quarters to three quarters,” Newton coach Don Cameron said. “We had a lot of games this year where we’ve played two good quarters. Today, we played three. We got a little rushed in the fourth quarter. We had trouble rebounding. We gave up a lot of offensive boards. We turned the ball over some in the fourth quarter. They were a very physical team. They handed it to us by 22 the first time, so we’re showing improvement. We keep climbing the mountain, getting a little higher each time.
“I’m proud of the way the kids keep persevering. They are a resilient group. If they keep at it, good things can still happen for them.”
Kyler Steadman and Garrett Dinsmore each scored 14 points for the Panthers, 12-4 overall and 8-0 in AV-CTL I play. Josiah Ray scored 11 points.
Jenson Kingsley led Newton with 16 points. Grant Walker added 12.
Newton led 12-5 early, but a Steadman trey just before the buzzer tied the game 16-16.
Newton led by as many as seven in the second quarter, with chances to extend the lead, but late turnovers allow Derby to tie the game 32-32 at the half.
“That’s big for us,” Cameron said. “We had chances to extend the lead and didn’t do it. We have to take advantage of those opportunities.”
Newton scored first in the third quarter, but Derby ran off six straight to take the lead for the first time in the game. Derby led by as many as seven. A Jacob Wright trey with three seconds remaining cut the Panther lead to two, 50-48.
Derby opened the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run. Walker hit two free throws with 4:56 in regulation for Newton’s first points of the period. Taylor Schieber hit two free throws with 2:21 remaining to put Derby up by 12. Schieber hit two more 17 seconds later.
Newton falls to 3-13, 0-8 in AV-CTL I play. Newton hosts South at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
“They beat us on a shot at the buzzer last time we played them,” Cameron said. “They have been playing well of late. Our guys just have to keep on playing hard.”
