HESSTON — The Hesston College women’s basketball team struggled with fouls and rebounds, allowing the Bethel College junior varsity to claim a 67-60 win Tuesday at Yost Center in Hesston.
The Larks were hit with 30 fouls with two starters fouling out. Bethel held a 34-29 edge on the board. Bethel outshot Hesston 38.6 percent to 32.3 percent.
“We talked before the game, the varsity has been starting slow, and we wanted to get out to a fast start,” Bethel coach Adrian Howie said. “We couldn’t do it, but the girls did a good job of getting under control and getting back in the game. (Rebounding) is an emphasis every day in practice. We’re not the tallest team around. We have to work hard rebounding. That’s a point of pride for us. We’ve got a group of girls who love the game and want as many minutes as they can get.”
“We try to be aggressive on defense, and that led to early foul trouble,” Hesston coach Dan Harrison said. “They got some free throws. They hit 12 of 18 in the first half. When we pressured, we forced some turnovers, but Bethel got the baskets when they needed to. I have to give them credit. They worked hard and made things happen. We’re a better team than what we showed tonight.”
Samantha Askew led the 2-0 Threshers with 14 points and eight rebounds. Brandi Moral added 12 points. Brittney Moral scored 11 points with nine rebounds. Holly Anthony scored 10 points.
Kari Huesinkveld led Hesston with 19 points. Lynae Wright scored 10 points. Shelby Barrett had 13 rebounds.
Hesston jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but fouls and turnovers allowed Bethel to get back in the game. The Threshers took their first lead of the game on a pair of Lindsay Waltner free throws with 7:27 left in the half. Bethel led 34-28 at the half.
Bethel extended its lead to 11 in the second half. Hesston replied with a 6-0 run. A pair of Holly Anthony free throws, followed by an Anthony layup on a feed from Waltner, put the Threshers up by 13 with 6:13 remaining. Bethel then missed three straight free throws.
A Heusinkveld trey with less than three minutes to play cut the Thresher lead to five. Bethel turned the ball over on the next possession with 2:25 to play.
With 2:04 left, Bethel was called for an offensive foul and a technical foul, but Hesston missed both free throws and were stopped on the ensuing possession.
Brittany Moral hit one of two free throws with 44.4 seconds remaining to put the Thershers up by six. After trading turnovers, A.C Holt missed two free throws for Hesston. Rachelle VanGundy hint one of two free throws for Bethel with 27.7 seconds remaining. Anthony hit two more free throws with 11.6 seconds remaining to put the game out of reach.
“With Hesston and Bethel being so close, it’s always a good game,” Howie said. “I don’t know how much our girls know about the rivalry but they played hard. We have to learn to play with poise at the end. They put up a press, and we backed down a little. We made enough plays to win it.”
Hesston, 3-6, hosts the Colorado Christian University junior varsity at 6 p.m. Friday in the American Family Insurance Thanksgiving Classic, followed by Northern Oklahoma-Enid at 6 p.m. Saturday.
“We’re pretty excited about this weekend,” Harrison said. “We have the Colorado Christian JV coming in. Then we have Northern Oklahoma-Enid, and they are a top 20 team in the nation.”
