Wingnuts make history in loss

EL PASO, Texas —

The Wichita Wingnuts turned the first triple play in franchise history Wednesday, but still lost to the El Paso Diablos 8-6 in American Association play in El Paso.

The Wingnuts jumped to a 6-2 lead, sending 10 batters to the plate in the top of the fifth.

Walter Olmstead, Stantrel Smith and Alex Derhak each went three for four for El Paso. Smith drove in three runs. Olmstead scored three runs. Josh Nietz went six innings for the win, striking out four. Chris Thompson pitched the ninth for his second save of the year.

Blake Gailen and Brenan Herrera each went two for four for Wichita, 4-3. Heath Keel had two RBIs. Daniel Caldwell took the loss in relief.

The series concludes at 8:05 p.m. today.
