LAWRENCE —

The Newton High School gymnastics team sent three members to the Lawrence All-Around Invitational Monday.

On vault, Jamie Hansen scored an 8.25, Maria Jantz scored an 8.5 and Riley Roberts scored an 8.6. On the uneven parallel bars, Jantz scored a 7.15, Roberts scored a 7.525 and Hansen scored a 7.15. On balance beam, Jantz scored a 7.45, Roberts scored an 8.025 and Hansen scored an 8.4. On floor exercises, Hansen scored a 7.85, Roberts scored an 8.15 and Jantz scored an 8.2.

Hansen had a 31.65 total. Jantz had a 30.25. Roberts had a 32.3.

“This is a fun meet with no team scores,” Newton coach JoAnne Thaw said. “Thirteen of the 14 Kansas schools plus Lee’s Summit, Mo., schools were represented at the meet. Each school is invited to bring one to three all-around gymnasts. Sophomores Jamie Hansen and Maria Jantz and freshman, Riley Roberts attended the meet.

“It was a good meet for us. I think it was probably the best overall showing we’ve had at this meet. Each event looked good and was pretty consistent with what they are used to scoring. Jamie and Riley both stuck their beam routines and Maria just had a hand touch on her dismount. Both Jamie and Riley tried a half twist in their floor routine and fell just a bit short hurting their scores by half a point, but giving them more confidence and determination to get them in their routines before the end of the season.”

The team hosts the Newton Invitational at noon Saturday.
