Franz wins Nationals

HUTCHINSON — Brian Franz of Halstead won the NCRA Modified division of 55th Hutchinson Nationals Saturday at the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

It was the first win for Franz at the Hutchinson Nationals. Franz trailed Ross Shipman of Belle Plain by six cars entering the final lap, but Shipman blew a tire, allowing Franz to regain the lead.

Tyler Davis finished second and Jim Johnson finished third.

Babe Ruth tourney set for Moundridge

MOUNDRIDGE — The 13- to 15-year-old Babe Ruth Baseball State Tournament will be Friday through July 26 in Moundridge.

The eight-team tournament begins at noon Friday with four games. Opening ceremonies will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Competition continues at noon Saturday and noon Sunday with four games each day. There will be two games beginning at 1 p.m. Monday with the first championship game at 3:30 p.m.

The second championship game (if needed) is 10:30 a.m. June 26.

A home run derby will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Teams competing include Stevens County, Humboldt, Ottawa, Cottonwood Valley, Wellington, Osawatomie, West Franklin and the host Mid-Kansas.

Newton team 1-4 at state

DOUGLASS — The Newton Babe Ruth Softball 12 and under team finished 1-4 at the state tournament Friday and Saturday in Douglass.

Newton opened pool play with a 14-10 loss to Wellington. Kara Peaney won the SHE Award (sportsmanship, hustle and enthusiasm) for Newton.

Newton lost to Rose Hill 12-3. Emily Shirley won the SHE Award for Newton.

Newton lost to Coffeyville 20-3. Michaela Regier won the SHE Award.

Newton ended pool play with a forfeit win over Clearwater.

In bracket play, Newton lost to Independence. The score wasn’t listed. Nicole Engelken won the SHE Award. Shirley won the WOW Award (defensive play).

Wings to host

open tryouts

PARK CITY — The Wichita Wings will have an open tryout from 9 a.m. to noon July 30 at Hartman Arena.

A second round of tryouts will be July 31 for players invited from the first day.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. July 30. Players must be at least 16-years old or older. Players younger than 18 years old must have graduated from high school.

“We will take players that possess the skill sets that would allow them to play at the highest professional indoor soccer level,” Wings coach LaBaron Hollimon said.

Players must wear indoor soccer shoes with no cleats.
