The Newton High School wrestling team celebrated senior night with a 77-0 win over Salina Central, just seven points shy of a perfect score, Thursday in an Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I dual meet at Ravenscroft Gym.
The number 77 has another significance for the Railers. Newton clinched a tie for the AV-CTL Division I title. The last Railer league title in wrestling came in 1977.
“It’s been a long time,” Newton coach Jude Wilson said. “There have been a lot of people in Newton working hard to bring this. It’s a really big accomplishment.”
Of the 10 matches on the matches on the mat, Newton won seven by fall, two by major decision and one by decision.
“We wrestled pretty well,” Wilson said. “We didn’t make too many mistakes. We had a really good tournament last week. I’m happy with where we are right now.”
Quinton Harrison opened the dual at 120 pounds with five takedowns against Central’s Tyler Lindzey before getting the pin.
Dakota Long followed at 126 pounds with a second-period pin over Central’s Gaige Menke. Garrett scored a first period pin over Central’s Trace Cutbirth at 138 pounds. Miles Johns followed at 145 pounds with a first-period pin over Central’s Tre Ponting.
Peter Nelson scored a second-period pin over Central’s Sam Allen at 160 pounds. Dillon Archer needed just 15 seconds to pin Central’s Chase Livengood at 195 pounds. Garrett Lee ended the match with a first period pin over Central’s Lucas Berndt at heavyweight. Lee scored five takedowns before the pin.
At 132 pounds, Anthony Monares scored four takedowns and a reversal for a 10-2 major decision over Central’s Dayton Will. At 152 pounds, Heydon Mock took a 10-0 lead against Central’s Ben Parks. Mock fell one second short of a technical fall, scoring a two-point near fall at the final buzzer and settling for a 16-2 major decision.
Raymond Gallegos scored three takedowns and a reversal in an 8-3 decision over Central’s Kade True.
South had four open weights, giving forfeit wins to Newton wrestlers Justice Grant (106 pounds), Earnest Johns (113 pounds), Jared Langley (170 pounds and Cordell Clark (182 pounds).
In addition, Newton won all four JV matches, two by pin.
Newton ends the regular season at 6 p.m. Thursday at Salina South. A win over South would give the Railers the title outright. If South beats Newton, the Railers would share the title with South and Derby. Regionals follow 9:30 a.m. Feb. 18, also at Salina South.
“We’re working individually on the things we do well,” Wilson said. “We also have to eliminate some mistakes we still have a tendency to make. We have to keep working on conditioning. South has some young kids that have really been improving. They are a good team.”
