Bethel cages drop opener
SPRINGDALE, Ark. — The Bethel College women’s basketball team dropped its season opener to Lyon College 76-46 Monday on a neutral court in Springdale.Lyon, an NAIA Division I school from Batesville, Ark., jumped to a 41-22 lead at the half.Stephanie Glover led Lyon with 16 points and nine rebounds. Ashley Waller scored 10 points with eight rebounds. K.K. Hodges scored 10 points with six rebounds.Bethel’s scoring information was not reported at press time.The Threshers host Oklahoma Wesleyan at 7 p.m. Friday at Thresher Gym.Thresher women down TaborHILLSBORO — The Bethel College women’s soccer team claimed fourth place in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 2-1 win over rival Tabor Saturday in Hillsboro.The Threshers end the regular season 7-8-2, 5-3-1 in KCAC play. The Threshers had their best season in more than six years, qualifying for the conference post-season for the first time in years.Tabor ends the season 3-11-3, 1-6-2 in KCAC play.The winning goal came in the 61st minute, an own goal. Michelle Love opened scoring in the 51st minute with an assist from Kelsie Wilson. Tabor scored 51 seconds later on a goal by Leigh Costello.Alex Rodriguez had two saves in goal for Bethel. Aubrey Whitehorn had four saves for Tabor. The Threshers held a 17-8 advantage in total shots.Bethel will host Friends at 7 p.m. Saturday at Thresher Stadium in the KCAC post-season quarterfinals. Six different players scored goals. Jeff Christian had two assists. Mike Kneeland scored for Wichita. Doug Groenestege had 21 saves for Missouri. Scott Campbell stopped 19 of 21 Missouri shots.Wichita veteran left wing Jason Duda has been put on the 14-day injured reserve with a back injury. Defenseman Chris Kovalcik is on the 30-day IR with a leg injury and can be activated Nov. 16.The Thunder signed defenseman Jason Woll Thursday. Woll is a second-year pro who played 10 games with Cincinnati of the ECHL last season, scoring three goals. He played in 15 playoff games posting three assists.Woll played four years for the Milwaukee School of Engineering, an NCAA Division III school, scoring 77 points in 108 games. She swam a 56.62 in the 100-yard freestyle as an exhibition entry.
