golf postponed

The Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division II girls’ golf championships scheduled for Thursday at the Echo Hills Golf Course has been postponed because of the weather.
The meet has been rescheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday.

The Newton High School football schedule has been set for the 2010 season.
Newton moves up to the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I next year, but each team plays just five league games. Newton does not play Derby for the next two years. The sole non-league or non-district game will be Andover in week two.

McPHERSON — A last-minute change of venue didn’t hamper the efforts of the Bethel College volleyball team, stopping the McPherson College Bulldogs in three games Thursday in McPherson.
Bethel wins its second straight match, improving to 10-9, 7-1 in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play. McPherson falls to 4-13, 3-6 in KCAC play.
Bethel won the match 25-16, 25-11, 25-21. The match took just an hour.
Christy Weems led the Threshers with nine kills, followed by Whitney Hiebner with eight. Morgan Peters had 30 assists. Peters added 15 digs. Kristen Lohaus had three total blocks.
Bethel hosts Southern Nazarene in a non-conference match at 1 p.m. Saturday at Thresher Gym.

Hesston College
spikers fall

CONCORDIA — The Hesston College volleyball team fell to Cloud County Community College in three games Wednesday in Concordia.
Hesston lost the match 25-22, 25-17, 25-21.
“We played very solid tonight,” Hesston coach Kristen Rhodes said. “Sherrese (Ediger), Malerie (Hertzler), Danielle (Minder), Abby (Paden), Megan (McFadden) and Chelsey (Alden) were strong on the net both offensively and defensively. Jo (Carlsen) and Hannah (Hoffman) had an aggressive serve, both coming away for three aces.”
Minder and Hertzler each had four kills. Carlson had 13 assists. Alden had 11 digs. Ediger had five total blocks.
Hesston falls to 1-20, 0-8 in NJCAA Region VI, Division II play, and plays Fort Scott Community College at noon Saturday in Fort Scott.

NMS seventh-graders
stop Derby White

DERBY — The Newton middle schools seventh-grade football team downed Derby White 35-14  Thursday in Derby.
Newton led 21-0 at the half. While there was just an A game scheduled, Newton used many B players in the second half.
Cody Reimer scored on a three-yard run. Jack Kingsley hit a touchdown pass to Josh Robinson. Zach Gaede scored on a one-yard run. Sean Boston scored on a pass from Kingsley. Bradley Million scored on a 10-yard run.
Drake Sturgeon hit three PAT kicks. Garrett Schulte ran in a two-point conversion.
Kingsley, Cole Sturgeon and Robinson each had an interception.
Newton is 5-1 and ends the season at 5 p.m. Oct. 15 at Maize South. There will be both an A and B game. The two teams are tied for second in the Pioneer League Division I.

Wingnuts’ Porter
takes honors

WICHITA — Wichita Wingnuts left fielder Greg Porer was named the American Association “Star of Stars” by PA-Sports Ticker.
The award goes to the player in each professional league with the best overall stats.
Porter led the AA in batting average (.372), tied for first in home runs (21) and was second in RBIs (86). He was first in hits (140), on-base percentage (.453), slugging percentage (.617) and extra-base hits (48).
Porter also was named the 2009 Independent Player of the Year by Baseball America. Porter was the AA and Wingnuts player of the year. He was batter of the month in June and batter of the week four times.

Wichita State bowlers
to open season

WICHITA — The Wichita State bowling team will open the season Saturday and Sunday at the 50th annual Mid States Tournament at Northrock Lanes in Wichita.
The tournament is free and open to the public. There will be 37 teams, including Wichita State and Newman.
Teams will bowl 10 team games and 16 Baker games.
Play begins at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, running through about 9 p.m. Play resumes at 8 a.m. Sunday with the awards ceremony slated for 3:30 p.m.

Thunder signs
defenseman

WICHITA — The Wichita Thunder hockey team added defeseman Jim Jorgensen to the training camp roster.
A native of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Jorgensen played in 73 career professional games, all in the ECHL. He holds a +7 plus-minus rating (goals scored versus goals against while a player is on the ice).
He signed in 2008 with the Las Vegas Wranglers. Last season, he played with Las Vegas, Gwinnett and Phoenix, scoring eight goals and 15 assists om 65 games.
He played collegiately at NCAA Division I Ferris State, where he scored 38 points in 114 games.
Wichita plays a pair of exhibition games against expansion Missouri at 7:05 p.m. today and Saturday at the Wichita Ice Center.
