WICHITA — The Newton High School wrestling team ended the season with a pair of medals Saturday at the Class 5A state wrestling tournament at Intrust Bank Arena in Wichita.

The Railers finished in 21st place out of 32 teams. Emporia won the meet with 157 points, followed by Lansing at 148 and Andover Central at 118.
“It was nice to get the two medals,” Newton coach Jude Wilson said. “Here, it’s tough to get any. We had a lot of tough battles. Obviously, you’d like to get more than that but you have to feel good about the kids coming through. ... I’m just proud of all our kids this weekend, the way they competed. They didn’t leave anything out there.”
Harrison opened the day with an 8-2 decision over Parker Fields of Pittsburg. Harrison got the first takedown, adding a reverse and backpoints in the second period, and putting the match away with a takedown in the third period.
In the consolation quarterfinals against Korey Pfannenstiel of Hays, Harrison scored an escape, a takedown and a pair of backpoints in the second period. Harrison rode Pfannenstiel early in the third period, scoring the pin with 22 seconds remaining in the match.

Harrison ends the season 29-17.
“It was really a long day for Quinton,” Wilson said. “He had a long day today but really wrestled well for two days. It was really just a great job of wrestling for the weekend.”
Garcia opened in the consolation semifinals against Leo Beck of Mill Valley. Garcia gave up a takedown in the first period and an escape and a takedown in the second. In the third, Garcia scored an escape but then gave up a penalty point for backing out of the ring. Beck added one more takedown for an 8-2 decision.
In the fifth-place match, Garcia faced Kyle Pacheo of Gardner-Edgerton. Garcia scored with an escape in the second period. Pacheo scored with an escape in the third. Garcia ends the season 28-13.
“It’s always tough to lose your last match of the season,” Wilson said. “We’re proud of him. He’s been there for us all year long, placing in these tournaments. It was really a great effort.”
Senior Stuart McConnell at 171 pounds opened with a second-period pin over Alex Meikel of Bishop Miege. In the consolation quarterfinals, McConnell faced Hunter Weddington of Andover, who took a 2-1 lead in the first period. In the second period, McConnell got a takedown and a 4-3 lead. At the end of the second period, after about a two-minute discussion with the Andover coach, Weddington was awarded a takedown for a 5-4 lead. McConnel ends the season tied for seventh and 25-20.

Hernandez ends the season 15-19.
Newton loses three seniors, including two state qualifiers.
“We hate to see them go,” Wilson said. “We’ll really miss their leadership, but it’s time for them to move on. We’ll have some younger kids to take their places. We get a lot of kids back. We’ll have some middle school kids come in and, hopefully, make a statement. We’ll see.
“As a coach, you’d like to see them stay involved in wrestling in the off-season — the kids’ club tournaments and freestyle tournaments. All that mat time helps. Obviously, I’d like to see them in the weight room getting stronger. I like to see them in other sports, too, learning to compete.”
