The Newton High School wrestling team was aided by three forfeit wins to claim a 38-32 dual meet over Salina Central Thursday at Ravenscroft Gym.

Each team won five matches. Central won three by fall to one for Newton. The Railers won two by major decision as did Central.

Zack Engelken (106), Grant Treaster (113) and Brayden Miller (195) all won by forfeit for the Railers. Newton locked up the win when Wyatt Hendrickson was moved up to 220 pounds and pinned Cole Butts in 45 seconds.

After nearly giving up a takedown in the opening seconds, Hendrickson took control.

“It wasn’t too much of a surprise and I knew it was going to happen,” Hendrickson said. “Those guys are a little different to wrestle. You can’t do the normal stuff you would do a 195 pounder. I knew all these big guys, all they do is leverage, so I took a little shot. You hear the crowd go ‘Oh!’ But I knew it would turn out all right.”

Henrdickson had an eventful summer wrestling. He finished third in both freestyle and Greco-Roman at the USA Wrestling Cadet Nationals in Fargo, N.D. He was named a double All-American at the meet and was the top finisher from Kansas.

“I did a lot of tournaments this summer,” Hendrickson said. “Fargo was a great experience. I just wanted to get in the top eight and make All-American. In both, I had a real shot at the finals. It was a great experience. To be the highest finisher from Kansas was really nice. It helped carry into the high school season. Now people in Kansas know me. At Ark City, a lot of people know me now that I didn’t know.”

Hendrickson is a defending state runner-up and ranked first at 195 pounds in the latest coaches poll.

“This weekend, I don’t want to give up any points,” Hendrickson said. “I’d like to get all pins if I can. I want to get back to the state finals this year and maybe not give up any takedowns.”

“We got the lead early. They battled back in the middle,” Newton coach Tommy Edgmon said. “Unfortunately, (Central was) open at 195. We decided to move Wyatt up to 220 to give him a match. We had Cyle Gautchi (ranked second in Class 5A at 220) coming back from an injury he suffered in football. We could have put him in at heavyweight, but we already had it clinched. We’ll let Cyle heal up and get him ready for the weekend.”

Newton’s first win on the mat came at 132 pounds, when Boone Roberson scored a 12-3 major decision over Isaiah Harder.

Josh Edson followed at 138 with a 7-1 decision over Levi Sutton.

A late takedown in the third period gave Newton’s Dante Harper a 9-1 major decision over Central’s Cayman Munson at 160 pounds.

At 170 pounds, Bryan Cusick jumped ahead early and went on to a 6-0 decision over Central’s Evan Bishop.

Newton’s Sawyer Mock was pinned in the second period by Central’s Julion Falco at 120.

Central’s Cooper Chard scored a 12-2 major decision over Trevor Waldrop at 145 pounds.

At 152 pounds, Central’s Kray True pinned Dehann Nelson in the first period.

At 182 pounds, Taylon Peters scored a late takedown for a 9-1 major decision over Newton’s Colby Beer.

At heavyweight, James Morrow of Central pinned Brecken Wedel in the second period.

Newton gave up a forfeit win to Drew Burgoon at 126 pounds.

Newton improves to 3-4 in dual meets, 1-1 in AV-CTL I duals.

Newton gets one day off and competes Saturday at the Goodwill Invitational in Douglass, Newton’s first bracketed tournament of the season.

“We started out wit a bang in the dual meets,” Edgmon said. “It was a rough weekend last weekend. We had three weights open. It’s nice to get everybody back and fill all the weights. I’m excited to go into this weekend and see what our kids can do.”
