EMPORIA — The Newton High School boys’ basketball team fell behind early and were never able to recover, falling to Emporia 75-46 Friday in the season opener in Emporia.

Newton was without guard Cailen Valdez and post Demarius Peterson for what coach Andy Hill said were disciplinary reasons. That left just Ty Berry as the sole Railer player with any varsity experience.

“It’s tough when you turn the ball over,” Hill said. “I think we had 12 at the half. We just had a lot of bad decisions — either turnovers or one-pass shots. We had no-pass shots. We weren’t sharing the ball and we didn’t play like we trusted each other. Part of that is on me. That means I didn’t have them prepared in practice, making sure they understand what we do on offense. We’ll get to work tomorrow to try and correct some things.”

Berry led the Railers with 17 points.

“We’re not going to use (lack of experience) as an excuse,” Hill said. “We came up here to compete and win. We just didn’t get the job done. We will learn from it. We’ll get better day-by-day. We were 0-6 last season and were able to rebound.”

Emporia was led by Jay Wilson and Dylan Farr with 16 points each. Ja’Len Carter scored 13. Jace Stewart scored 10 points.

Up 5-4 early, Newton gave up a 12-0 run. Newton got back within eight at the end of the period, 18-10. The Railers gave up a run in the second quarter and trailed 34-22 at the half.

Newton got within nine early in the third quarter. Down by 10 after a Kolyn Sauceda trey, Newton gave up a 13-2 run. Spencer Stewart hit a layup at the buzzer to put Emporia up 57-35.

Emporia continued to pull away in the fourth quarter.

Newton hosts Goddard Eisenhower at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ravenscroft Gym. Eisenhower finished third at state last year in Class 5A.

“They are definitely loaded,” Hill said. “They lost their big guy, (Matt) Pile. They have an all-state caliber point guard (Dylan Vincent) and several other strong players. We’ll have to get back to work and get ready to face them.”
