GOLDEN, Colo. — The Bethel College men’s basketball team was able to stay in the game in stretches against NCAA Division II Colorado Christian, the Cougars proved to be a little too much in a 91-72 win over Bethel at the Colorado School of Mines Classic.

Bethel fell behind by nine in the first 5:14 of play. The Threshers trailed 45-33 at the half.

Bethel made a run early in the second half, getting as close as three points. Down by three with 13:50 to play, Colorado Christian made a 10-0 run. A pair of free throws with 5:32 remaining put the Cougars up by 22. Bethel made one last run to get as close as 15 with 1:26 to play, but gave up the last four points.

Stefan Hackenthal led CCU with 37 points, hitting 13 of 21 from the field, including six of 11 3-pointers. Jeremiah Hanson scored 16 points. Isaiah Hanson scored 13. Christian Hyatt scored 12.

Bethel used 12 players and got a fairly balanced scoring effort. Maurice Jordan scored 11 points, followed by Trey Sleep with 10.

Bethel was outscored 39-15 from 3-point range and finished just 22 of 60 from the field. CCU was 34 of 68 shooting, 13 of 34 from 3-point range.

The Cougars improve to 1-4 for the season. Since CCU is an NCAA Division II team, the game counts as an exhibition for the Threshers.

Bethel finishes its Colorado road trip at 4 p.m. today against host Colorado School of Mines. The Orediggers are 5-0 after an 86-84 win over Concordia (Neb.) in overtime.
