The Bethel College men’s basketball team had unbeaten Southwestern on the ropes for 30 minutes, but couldn’t deliver the knockout punch, falling 93-87 Tuesday in KCAC play at Thresher Gym.

Southwestern improves to 9-0, 3-0 in KCAC play. Bethel drops to 2-6, 1-2 in KCAC play.

The key in the game was rebounding. Bethel was outrebounded 42-34, allowing Southwestern numerous second-chance points. Both teams hit 18 of 36 from the the field in the second half.

Bethel coach Tony Hoops was unavailable for comment after the game.

Cameron Hunt led Southwestern with 23 points, followed by Kyrece Mills with 17, Jacob Horsch with 16 and D.J. Wallace with 13.

Terrell Marshall led Bethel with 18 points, followed by Dakota Foster with 16, David Harris with 15 and Joe Rushing with 13. Foster had hit career high.

Bethel jumped out to a 12-4 lead. The Threshers led by as many as nine, missing chances to extend it further. Southwestern tied the game 22-22 on a Cameron Hunt layup. Lorenzo Martinez hit a trey on the Moundbuilders’ next possession to put Southwestern up by one.

Bethel got back up by four with two minutes remaining, but gave up a 7-0 run to end the half and trail 35-32.

After a hot start from the field, Bethel finished 36 percent (12 of 34), while Southwestern overcame a slow start to hit 45 percent (15 of 33). Bethel was outrebounded 21-16.

Neither team led by more than four for the first 10 minutes of the second half. Down 57-56, Southwesten made a 13-5 run capped by back-to-back treys to lead by seven with 9:03 to play.

A three-point play for Hunt put Southwestern up by 11 less than a minute later. Bethel got back within six on a Dakota Foster trey with seven minutes to play. After two stops and a pair of Southwestern free throws, Foster hit another trey. Foster hit a trey with 5:03 remaining to get Bethel within three. The Threshers then missed a pair of free throws. Horsch answered with a trey with 4:29 to play.

Foster struck with a three-point play with 4:14 to play. Bethel made two stops, but turned it over on its next two possessions. Horsch hit two free throws with 2:54 left to put Southwestern up by five. Mills followed with a layup with 1:49 to play. A Hunt three-point play with 1:04 to play put Southwestern up by nine. The Threshers got as close as five in the final minute.

Bethel takes on a pair of NCAA Division II teams this weekend in Golden, Colo. Both games will count as exhibitions for the Threshers. Bethel takes on 0-4 Colorado Christian 2 p.m. Friday and 4-0 Colorado School of Mines 4 p.m. Saturday.
