WICHITA — The Bethel College women’s basketball team got a look at a higher level of basketball Tuesday night, falling to NCAA Division II Newman University 71-38 at Fugate Gym in Wichita.

Bethel trailed 15-6 after the first half, but managed to stay with the Jets a little bit better in the second quarter, trailing 35-20 at the half.

Newman outscored Bethel 20-10 in the third quarter and 16-8 in the fourth.

Dede Johnson led Newman with 22 points off the bench. Hannah Alexander added 10 points. Twelve of Newman’s 13 players scored in the game.

Fantasia Johnson and Abby Schmidt each scored six points to lead the Threshers.

Newman improves to 3-0. The game counts as an exhibition for Bethel.

The 4-2 Threshers open Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play at 6 p.m. today at Bethany. The Swedes are 3-3.
