The Bethel College men’s basketball team got the monkey off its back, or in this case Tiger, beating Doane University of the Great Plains Athletic Conference 78-62 Friday night at Thresher Gym.

The win was Bethel’s first of the season. The Tigers fell to 3-2.

Bethel jumped out 17-7 in the first 5:40 of play. Doane replied with a 9-2 run, but the Threshers jumped back out by as many as 13. Bethel led by 11 at the half, 41-30.

Bethel made a 9-4 run to open the second half. Doane got within nine with 9:13 to play. A technical foul by Doane with 5:39 to play gave the Threshers a pair of free throws for a 17-point lead. The Tigers got no closer than 12 points in the remaining time.

Chase Bannister and David Harris each scored 15 points for Bethel. Dakota Foster scored 12 points. Joe Rushing scored 11 points.

For Doane, Rylee Zimmerman scored 14 points, followed by Anthony Laravie with 13. Quin Conner scored 11 points with 17 rebounds. Nick Kornieck added 10 points with 10 rebounds.

Bethel forced 18 turnovers and committed only eight.

Bethel opens KCAC play at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bethany.
