WICHITA — A pair of Bethel College women’s basketball players were named Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference players of the week for the week ending Sunday.
Freshman Abby Schmidt was named offensive player of the week, while junior Jade Brown was named defensive player of the week.
Schmidt, a 6-foot-2 center from Newton, scored 53 points with 21 rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals. She had her first double-double Friday in an overtime win against Haskell Indian Nations.
Brown, a guard from Samford, Fla., finished the week with 35 points, 14 rebounds, 14 assists and five steals.
Bethel finished the week 3-0.
Panthers to host
The Newton Panther Softball Organization is hosting a catching clinic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 18 at Centennial Park in Newton.
The clinic is open to girls ages 8 to 18. It will be hosted by Vanessa Oakden, a former catcher for Friends University.
“The camp will cover every aspect of the catching position including stances, blocking, receiving, throwing and proper stretching and conditioning,” according to an announcement from the Panthers.

WICHITA — Wichita Thunder forward Kyle Platzer was recalled Tuesday to the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League by the Edmonton Oilers.
Platzer has five goals and nine assists in nine games this season.
A former fourth-round NHL Entry Draft pick by Edmonton in 2013, Platzer scored a goal with seven assists in 51 games for Bakersfield last season.
Defenseman Vytal Cote was released. Cote joined Wichita after three games with the Mississippi RiverKings of the Southern Professional Hockey League.
