McPHERSON — The Bethel College men’s basketball team took unbeaten Hastings as far as it could before falling 80-78 Friday afternoon at the McPherson Classic.

Jake Hansen hit a shot with three seconds remaining to put the Broncos to 3-0 in the season.

Bethel trailed by six in the first seven minutes of play, but stormed ahead to a 41-28 lead with 4:31 remaining in the first half.

Hastings was able to get back within five at the half, 46-41.

Bethel led by as many as eight in the first five minutes of the second half. Hastings answered with a 13-0 run. Bethel got back up by six with seven minutes to play, but Hastings was able to tie the game back up less than two minutes later. Down by two, Joe Rushing tied the game with 13 seconds to play.

Kevin Miller led Hastings with 17 points, followed by Zach Kitten with 16, Connor Musiel with 14, Hansen with 12 and Bart Hiscock with 10. Hiscock added 12 rebounds.

David Harris scored 19 points for Bethel, followed by Chase Bannister with 12, Rushing with 11 and Terrell Marshall with 11.

Bethel was outrebounded 45-31.

The Threshers are 0-2 and play Haskell Indian Nations at 2 p.m. today. Haskell is 0-3 after a 104-69 loss to host McPherson.
