McPHERSON — The Bethel College women’s basketball team used a double-double from Newton grad Abby Schmidt to down Haskell Indian Nations University 58-54 in overtime Friday afternoon at the McPherson Classic.

Schmidt scored 25 points with 13 rebounds and a pair of blocked shots to lead the Threshers.

Bethel fell behind 7-1 early, and trailed by as many as seven, but got back to within three at the end of the first quarter, 13-10.

Down by eight early in the second quarter, Bethel tied the game 19-19 with 1:50 remaining in the half. Haskell scored with 1:32 left in the half and held on for a 21-19 lead at intermission.

Bethel led by as many as 12 in the third quarter, but Haskell rallied to get within two at the end of the quarter, 40-38.

Bethel led by six midway in the fourth quarter. Haskell tied the game with 2:19 remaining. Schmidt hit a shot with 1:19 to play to put Bethel up by three. Jandra Levi hit a trey with 40 seconds remaining to tie the game. Bethel missed a 3-point shot with 10 seconds in regulation.

Haskell scored the first four points of overtime. Bethel tied the game on a Karyssa Henry free throw with 1:27 to play. Jade Brown put Bethel ahead with a shot with 55 seconds remaining. Schmidt iced the game with two free throws with three seconds remaining.

Brown scored 14 points for Bethel, 2-1.

Keli Warrior led Haskell with 18 points and 19 rebounds.

Bethel was 20 of 52 from the field, 14 of 28 in the second half and overtime. Haskell was 19 of 69, 11 of 40 in the second half and overtime. Bethel held a 51-40 rebounding edge.

Bethel plays Bellevue at noon today to close out play in the McPherson Classic. Before Friday’s game against host McPherson, Bellevue was 3-0 and received votes in the NAIA Division II pre-season poll.
