takes honors

WICHITA — Bethel College basketball player Joe Rushing was named the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference defensive player of the week for the week ending Sunday.

In a 93-87 loss to Avila, Rushing scored 26 points with seven rebounds, three assists and a steal in his Thresher debut.

Rushing is a 6-foot-5 junior from Victorville, Calif. He transferred to Bethel from Victor Valley College.

OTTAWA — Needing a win for a chance to reach the KCAC playoffs, the Bethel College men’s soccer team ended the season with a 2-0 loss to Ottawa Tuesday in Ottawa.

Ottawa scored both goals in the second half.

Lewis Verdouw scored in the 47th minute with an assist from Aaron Kavanagh. Ross Anderson added a goal in the 82nd minute with an assist from Verdouw.

Bethel held an 18-14 advantage in total shots, but Ottawa held a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal. Kobi Russom had six saves for Bethel. Angel Cruz had five saves for Ottawa, 9-7-2 overall and 7-3-1 in KCAC play to clinch the fourth seed and final first-round home game in the KCAC playoffs.

Bethel ends the season 7-11, 3-8 in KCAC play. Bethel lost its last eight games after a 7-3 start to the season.

Bethel women

lose to Ottawa

OTTAWA — The Bethel College women’s soccer team ended the season with an 8-0 loss to 13th-ranked (NAIA) Ottawa Tuesday in KCAC play in Ottawa.

Down 2-0 at the half, Bethel gave up six goals in the second half.

Caroline Jenkins scored two goals with two assists to lead Ottawa. Jessica Beall and Kayla Saucedo each added a goal with an assist. Samantha Mendoza, Ashley Alonzo, Monica Otero and Jaelynn Chargualaf each added a goal.

Bethel was outshot 41-2, 20-2 on goal. Maddie McDaniel had 12 saves in goal for Bethel. Kodie Johnson had no saves in 64:38 of play. Nicole Tallent had two saves in the remaining time.

Ottawa ends the regular season 15-2-1 and will take the second seed in the KCAC playoffs. Bethel ends the season 4-12, 1-9 in KCAC play, dropping the final six games of the season.
