WICHITA — A couple of bad breaks on a chilly, blustery evening, was enough to end the season for the Newton High School boys’ soccer team in a 3-0 loss to Kapaun-Mt. Carmel Tuesday night at the Stryker Soccer Complex Stadium in Wichita in the Class 5A state quarterfinals.
Alex Zachgo scored two goals for the Crusaders, 15-3-1.
“They got the ball back behind the defense,” Newton coach Scott Jantzi said. “All three of those first-half goals could have been prevented if we would have played smarter ball. In the first half, we weren’t able to connect any passes. In the second half, cooler heads prevailed. We were able to put passes together. We still weren’t able to get a shot. Year-after-year, Kapaun is a good squad. We have to be able to match their intensity. Tonight, we weren’t able to do that.”
Joe Chessmore had two saves in goal for Kapaun for the clean-sheet win. Hervey Medina had three saves in goal for Newton. The Railers were outshot 7-2, 6-2 on goal.
Possession was about even in the first half, but Kapaun was more efficient and created more chances. The Crusaders scored in the seventh minute on a Zachgo goal on a long run with an assist from Kevin Black.
Zachgo struck again in the 25th minute, taking a ball off a Railer defender. Kapaun scored in the 35th minute when Brendan Dehner scored on a 30-yard direct kick.
Kapaun outshot Newton 4-1 in the first half.
Newton made a couple of rushes early in the second half, but was only able to get one shot off. Kapaun was able to pressure the Railer defense late in the game, but Newton was able to hold the Crusaders off the rest of the way.
Newton ends the season 12-7. The Railers lose 11 seniors and a foreign exchange student.
“We had 12 seniors and they showed well and had a good season,” Jantzi said. “They reached the quarterfinals of state. We’re still trying to get over that hump and get to the next level. I think these younger guys coming up can get us back there. They need to continue to play and get that experience. The JV had a really good year. They played good soccer. It was fun to see them play. We just have to get them to the next level. We have to get them some games in the summer to prepare them for the next year. In the off-season, we need them to find club teams to play on. Out of the younger ones, everyone plays. We need to keep that up for them to get more experience for next year.”
