PRAIRIE VILLAGE — The Hesston High School girls’ tennis team claimed a 1-2 finish in doubles to claim a second-place team finish Saturday at the Class 3-2-1A state championships in Prairie Village.

Kansas City Christian won the team title over Hesston 44-40. Conway Springs was third at 37, followed by Wichita Independent at 23 and Central Plains at 14. There were 27 teams in competition.

In doubles, the team of Makaiya Russell and Ashley Hubbard downed teammates Kylie Martin and Michaela Martin in the finals 6-3, 6-0.

Russell and Hubbard downed Jera Wolke and Kara Koester of Conway Springs 7-6 (11-9), 6-1 in the semifinals. The Martins downed Juliet Bartels and Keira Knoflicek of Kansas City Christian 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 in the semifinals.

Russell and Hubbard end the season 29-4. Russell is a senior and Hubbard is a junior. The Martins end the season 22-4.

The singles results for Halle Krehbiel for Saturday were not posted by KSHSAA.
