MAIZE — The Newton High School girls’ tennis doubles tennis team of Rae Normai and Quinn Rhodes reached the semifinals of the Class 5A state championships after the first day of play Friday at the Maize South High School tennis complex.

After a first-round bye, Normai and Rhodes opened play with a 6-1, 6-0 win over league rivals Madison Arnold and Ana Vo of Maize. In the quarterfinals against Lindsay Adams and Alaina Cunningham of Maize, Normai and Rhodes won 6-0, 6-0.

Normai and Rae enter today’s semifinals 9-0 against either Brayden and Lauren Steven of Bishop Carroll or Meredith Bierbaum and Tara Devine of St. James Academy.

Hesston doubles

PRAIRIE VILLAGE — The Hesston High School girls’ tennis team has all three entries alive after the first day of play at the Class 3-2-1A state championships in Prairie Village.

Both Swather doubles teams have clinched medals by reaching the semifinals.

The team of Kylie Martin and Michaela Martin opened play with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kinsey Menold and Hannah Wertenberger of Sabetha. In the second round, the Martins downed Karlee Osner and Leslie Mies of Conway Springs 7-6 (7-2), 6-1. In the quarterfinals, the Martins topped Megan Karst and Brooklynn Kuhn of Victoria 6-3, 6-0. The two will meet top-seeded Keira Knoflicek and Juliet Bartels of Kansas City Christian today in the semifinals.

The team of Makaiya Russell and Ashley Hubbard received a first-round bye, then stopped Bristol Lewis and Lexi Neel of Meade 6-2, 6-4. In the quarterfinals, Russell and Hubbard downed Cassidy Kroboth and Tori Lamb of Ellsworth 7-5, 6-2. The two will meet Jera Woelke and Kara Koester of Conway Springs today in the semifinals.

In singles play, Halle Krehbiel opened with a win over Samantha Prewitt of Phillipsburg 6-0, 6-1. In the second round, Krehbiel downed Sydney Roe of Kingman 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). In the semifinals, Krehbiel fell to top seed Lilly McNeill of Kansas City Christian 6-0, 6-1.

Krehbiel will face Lydia Miller of Sterling today in the consolation quarterfinals.

Play begins at 9 a.m. today at Harmon Park Tennis Complex in Prairie Village.
