DERBY — The Newton High School volleyball team finished second Saturday at the Derby Invitational with a 5-1 record.

Newton opened pool play with a win over Wichita East 25-9, 25-19.

Maggie Remsberg and Taylor Antonowich each had six kills, followed by Kyndal Bacon with four. Bacon served three aces, followed by Antonowich with two. DesiRay Kernal and Remsberg each downed a pair of blocks. Kernal, Antonowich and Remsberg each had five digs. Bacon set 20 assists.

Newton downed Maize South 25-15, 25-22.

Antonowich had 13 kills, followed by Remsberg with six and Caroline Barger with five. Barger downed two blocks. Antonowich had eight digs, followed by Marah Zenner with seven and Kernal with six. Bacon set 31 assists.

Newton downed Wichita Heights 25-20, 25-15.

Antonowich had 13 kills, followed by Asha Regier with six. Bacon served three aces. Bacon downed two blocks, both solo. Regier had 10 digs, followed by Antonowich with nine, Remsberg with six and Bacon with six. Bacon set 28 assists.

Newton ended pool play with a win over Wichita South 25-7, 25-8.

Kernal and Remsberg each had nine kills, followed by Regier with five. Regier served six aces. Antonowich had 11 digs, followed by Regier with nine and Kernal with seven. Bacon set 29 assists.

In the semifinals, Newton downed league rival Derby for the fourth time this season, winning 25-11, 25-20.

Antonowich had 11 kills for Newton, followed by Remsberg with seven. Bacon served four aces. Kernal downed three solo blocks, followed by Barger with two solo. Remsberg had eight digs, followed by Kernal and Antonowich with six each.

Gracyn Reynolds and Allison Roudybush each had four kills for Derby. Reynolds downed three blocks. Madi Young had six digs. Sydney Nilles set eight assists.

In the championship match, Newton fell to sixth-ranked (KVA, Class 6A) Washburn Rural 25-23, 17-25, 25-12.

Antonowich had 14 kills, followed by Remsberg with 12. Kernal, Bacon and Barger each downed two blocks. Bacon had 15 digs, followed by Remsberg and Antonowich with 14 each, Kernal with 12 and Regier with 12. Bacon set 32 assists.

Newton is 30-6 and hosts Hutchinson and Salina Central at 5 p.m. today for AV-CTL I play and senior day.
