SALINA — The Newton High School girls’ tennis team claimed a regional doubles title and a fifth-place team finish Saturday at the Class 5A regionals in Salina.

Host Salina Central won the meet with 17 points, followed by Salina South at 15, Valley Center at nine, Andover at eight, Newton at seven, Great Bend at one and Wichita Heights at one.

Salina Central and South each sent four entries to state. Valley Center qualified two entries to state. Newton and Andover each qualified one.

The Railers were led by the team of Rai Normai and Quinn Rhodes, which won the regional doubles title, finishing 3-0. In the finals, Normai and Rhodes downed Maddie Stack and Grace Holgerson of Salina Central 6-2, 6-1.

Normai, a foreign exchange student, and Rhodes, a junior, enter state play 7-0.

The team of Cattie Arrowsmith and Kenzi Gillispie lost in the first round to Peyton Kavanagh and Molly Michaelis of Salina Central 6-1, 6-1.

In singles play for Newton, Ashley Schmidt fell in the first round to Victoria Bishop of Valley Center 6-2, 6-1. Faye Smith lost in the first round to Callie Sanborn of Salina Central 6-0, 6-0.

“Very proud of all the girls,” Newton coach Nick Sisson said. “Ashley Schmidt finished her high school career turning in a great effort in singles. Faye Smith played her best tennis of the season as well. Cattie Arrowsmith and Kenzi Gillispie put up a great fight against a state qualifier. Rai Normai and Quinn Rhodes played well, especially in the finals and secured a regional title for Newton.”

Normai and Rhodes will compete at the Class 5A state championships Friday and Saturday at Maize South High School. Play begins at 11:30 a.m. Friday and resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday.
