qualifies

SALINA — Newton senior Kit Kingsley qualified for the Class 5A state golf championships after a fifth-place medal Monday at the regionals at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.

Shawnee Heights won the six-team field at 378, followed by Emporia at 432 and Salina Central at 439. The top three teams advance to state.

Topeka Seaman was fourth at 446, followed by Salina South at 464 and Newton at 479.

Ellie Cobb of Salina Central shot a four-over par 74 to claim top medalist honors, followed by Addison Botkin of Shawnee Heights at 87 and Eleana Steffen of Shawnee Heights at 91.

Kingsley shot a 95 to lead the Railers.

Newton freshman Mallory Seirer shot a 115 to place 15th, missing a state spot by two places and seven strokes.

Rounding out the field for Newton were Brynna Walton at 131, Naomi Kuhn at 139, Mollee Ewert-Smith at 149 and Anna Harder at 153.

Kingsley is the sole senior for the Railers.

The state meet is 9 a.m. Monday at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course.

Goessel wins

first game

ELLINWOOD — The Goessel High School football team claimed its first win of the season, stopping Ellinwood 72-38 Saturday in Eight-Man I regional play in Ellinwood.

Zach Zogleman rushed for 199 yards on 27 carries with six touchdowns to lead the Bluebirds. Luke Wiens rushed for 163 yards on 11 carries with a touchdown. Wiens hit all four passes he threw for 32 yards and a score. Jacob Hagewood also rushed for a touchdown. Carson Sterk caught a touchdown pass.

Tied 14-14 after the first quarter, Goessel outscored Ellinwood 24-8 in the second quarter and never trailed from there.

Ellinwood’s Drew Blake had 23 carries for 187 yards and three touchdowns.

Ellinwood drops to 1-4, 0-2 in district play. Goessel is 1-4, 1-1 in district play, and plays Friday at St. John-Hudson.

BC comeback

falls short

McPHERSON — Sadam Ali scored a goal with 2:29 remaining in regulation to hand McPherson College a 4-3 win over the Bethel College men’s soccer team Saturday in McPherson.

Bethel trailed 3-0 at the half, but fought back to tie the game on a Richard Ebel goal with 2:47 to play. McPherson regained the lead 18 seconds later.

Greg Roller had two goals with two assists for McPherson, 4-5 overall and 3-1 in KCAC play. Diego Loza added a goal with an assist.

Dante Texeira scored a goal with an assist for Bethel, 7-4, 3-1 in KCAC play. Thomas Minor V also scored a goal.

Bethel plays at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Sterling.

The Bethel College volleyball team fell to Tabor in three sets Saturday at Thresher Gym.

Bethel fell 28-26, 25-12, 25-22.

Amy Horner had 14 kills for Tabor, followed by Hesston High grad Jessana Nebel with 11 kills. Keeley Kroeker set 22 assists. Horner served three aces. Hesston grad Ali Jost had 20 digs. Sydney Peitz downed three blocks.

For Bethelm Katie Neira had five kills. Kelsie Anderson set 16 assists with two aces and 14 digs. Neira downed four blocks. Tabor is 14-7, 9-3 in KCAC play. Bethel drops to 3-14, 1-11 in KCAC play.

HESSTON — The Hesston College women’s soccer team fell to Dodge City Community College 4-2 Saturday at Hesston.

Siobhan Longmore scored two goals with an assist for Dodge City. Keeley Milner added a goal with an assist. Pam Rosales also scored a goal.

Miya Gonda scored a goal with an assist for Hesston. Connor Atkinson added a goal.

Dodge City is 8-6-1, 6-3-1 in NJCAA Region VI play. Hesston falls to 8-7, 3-7 in district play.

Hesston plays Wednesday at Garden City Community College.

HESSTON — The Hesston College men’s soccer team edged Dodge City Community College 2-1 Saturday in Hesston.

Javier Reyna scored the game winner for Hesston in the 65th minute from Cain Hernandez. Nadeem Jaber scored in the 27th minute.

Abel Chevelon scored for DCCC in the 32nd minute.

Luke Hertzler had six saves for Hesston. H. Cabrera Viveros had six saves for Dodge City, 6-5-3.

Hesston, 7-6–1 overall and 2-5 in Region VI play, plays at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Garden City Community College.

HESSTON — The Hesston College volleyball team downed Cloud County Community College in three sets Friday at Yost Center.

Hesston won 25-20, 25-20, 25-22.

Haley Unruh led Hesston with 10 kills. Faith Hallmark set 24 assists. Kylie Brenneman had 15 digs. Kasselman and Sam Rossin each downed three blocks.

Hesston is 9-11 and plays at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Labette Community College.
