Hesston sweeps

Southeast tri

GYPSUM — The Hesston High School volleyball team claimed a pair of non-league wins Thursday at Southeast of Saline.

Hesston downed Junction City St. Xavier 25-5, 25-10; and Southeast of Saline 25-20, 25-11.

Southeast topped St. Xavier 25-4, 25-4.

“This was a good night for us, as we were able to sustain positive energy throughout most of

the evening,” Hesston coach Jason Peters said. “We tried a different lineup against St. Xavier and the girls were able to adjust well. Against Southeast of Saline, we had some communication errors and some tentativeness in the first set, but it was a great battle that we were able to pull out at the end. Southeast played very scrappy and had some hitters doing some things we haven’t seen much this season, so it was good for us to have to focus and adjust. In the second set, we played well,

picking up more of their attacks and tips and scoring kills at a high percentage. It felt good to have some momentum heading into a tough tournament at Council Grove this weekend.”

Hesston is 20-2 and will face Jefferson West, Wamego and Clearwater in pool play at Council Grove. Hesston travels to Halstead Tuesday to close out Central Kansas League play with Haven.

Halstead takes

1-2 at Burrton

BURRTON — The Halstead High School boys’ cross country team won the Burrton Invitational Thursday at Harvey County West Park, while the Dragon girls took second.

“It was a small, relaxed meet, but provided a challenging terrain and an enjoyable atmosphere,” Halstead coach Curtis Vermillion said. “The weather cooperated, with muggy temperatures in the 70s, and overcast skies. A light mist fell from time to time throughout the evening. I thought our runners stepped up and competed very well in this meet, and was pleased with the efforts of each runner.”

Halstead competes at the Central Kansas League Championships Thursday at Sixth Street Park in Pratt.

“We hope this be a good mental booster for the squad going into the CKL League Meet at Pratt next week,” Vermillion said. “This week we must focus on mental toughness and preparation, as well as our physical conditioning. We must bring our best, as the CKL will be very tough. The league meet will be the final meet of the year for some of our runners.”
