extend streak

The Bethel College men’s soccer team won its fourth game in a row and remains atop the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference table with a 3-2 win over Bethany Wednesday night at Joe W. Goering Field.

Jonas Tingberg, Chris Torres and Enrique Trujillo each scored a goal for the Threshers in the eighth, 44th and 62nd minutes. Torres added an assist.

Melvin Akingboye scored both goals for the Swedes, 2-7-1 overall and 1-2 in KCAC play. Jack Rhys-Jones had both assists. The Bethany goals came in the 18th and 86th minutes.

Bethel outshot the Swedes 24-8, 12-3 on goal. Albert Bratthammar had one save in goal for Bethel. Logan Galvin had nine saves in goal for Bethany.

There were eight cards drawn in the game, all yellows, five against the Threshers.

Bethel improves to 7-3, 3-0 in KCAC play. Bethel faces McPherson at 3 p.m. Saturday at McPherson Stadium. McPherson is 3-5, 2-1 in KCAC play, falling to Friends 4-2 Wednesday.

Thresher women

fall to Bethany

Kastel Heinold scored in the 103rd minute to lead the Bethany College women’s soccer team to a 2-1 win over Bethel Wednesday night in KCAC play at Bethel.

Bethany’s Ciara Dawson scored in the 63rd minute. Bethel tied the game on a goal by Alayna Wallace in the 83rd minute.

Bethel was outshot 19-4, 9-3 on goal. Kyla Williams had seven saves in goal for Bethel. Jordan Wells had two saves for Bethany.

Bethany improves to 5-3-1, 2-0-1 in KCAC play. Bethel falls to 3-6, 0-3 in KCAC play.

Bethel plays at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at McPherson.

fall to KWU

The Bethel College volleyball team managed to capture one set from KCAC leader Kansas Wesleyan, but that wasn’t enough to stop the Coyotes.

Kansas Wesleyan downed Bethel 29-27, 25-17, 15-25, 25-14.

The Coyotes, which received votes in the NAIA poll, improve to 14-4, 9-1 in conference play.

Hannah Reynolds and Kelsey Plummer each had 14 kills for KWU. Taylor Dodge set 28 assists. Paige Johnson had 23 digs, followed by Aspen Lungwitz with 13 and Bailey Gillig with 10. Plummer downed seven blocks.

Katie Neira had 17 kills, matching a season high, followed by Abby Kurtzer with 10. Kelsie Anderson set 36 assists. Rachel Bustillos had 22 digs, followed by Anderson with 15, Avery Myatt with 11 and Anna Stucky with 10. Neira and Sami Strauss each downed two blocks.

Bethel falls to 3-13, ending the first half of KCAC play 1-10.

Bethel hosts Tabor at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The Newton High School junior varsity edged Berean Academy 1-0 Wednesday at Fischer Field.

Michael Velasquez scored for Newton with an assist from Chase Ebert.

Newton plays at 5 p.m. today at Maize.

HC women

top Pratt CC

PRATT — Kenzie Johnson scored a goal from Miho Okuda in the 96th minute to lead the Hesston College women’s soccer team to a 2-1 overtime win over Pratt Community College Wednesday in NJCAA Region VI play in Pratt.

Avery Villines scored for Pratt in the 26th minute. Two minutes later, Okuda scored for Hesston.

Hesston outshot Pratt 10-3. Vivi Rodriguez had two saves in goal for Hesston. Brittany Smith had eight saves for Pratt, 1-10 overall and 1-7 in Region VI play.

Hesston is 8-6, 3-6 in region play, and hosts Dodge City Community College at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Hesston men

fall to PCC

PRATT — The Hesston College men’s soccer team fell to Pratt Community College 3-0 Wednesday in Pratt.

Scoring and stats were not reported at deadline.

The win was Pratt’s first of the season, improving t0 1-6-3, 1-5-2 in Region VI play.

Hesston is 6-6-1, 1-5 in region play. Hesston hosts Dodge City Community College at 5 p.m. Saturday.

HC spikers

fall to CCC

COFFEYVILLE — The Hesston College volleyball team fell to Coffeyville Community College in three sets Wednesday in Coffeyville.

The Larks fell 25-17, 25-19, 25-8.

Talleyshia Morris and Daniela Santos each had eight kills for Coffeyville. Dekyra Dennis set 35 assists. Santos had 13 digs, followed by Liz Domary Ortiz with 12. Morris downed three blocks.

For Hesston, Sierrah Long and Sam Rossin each had six kills. Faith Hallmark set 24 assists. Kylee Kasselman had eight digs. Cassidy King downed three blocks.

Coffeyville is 27-1, 7-0 in NJCAA Region VI, Division II play.

Hesston is 8-11, 2-4 in NJCAA Region VI, Division II play. Hesston hosts Cloud County Community College at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
