After a slow start, the Newton High School boys’ soccer team fought back to send Tuesday’s game against Derby at Fischer Field into overtime.

Adrian Schrage scored on a breakaway in the 85th minute to lead Derby to a 2-1 win over the Railers.

Newton freshman Alex Sanchez scored on a pass from Andy Deckert in the 75th minute to send the game into extra time.

“Derby definitely has our number,” Newton coach Scott Janzti said. “That’s about five in a row where they have gotten us. We just weren’t able to execute at the right time. We did a good job of attacking in the first half. We just didn’t create any quality opportunities. As the game went on, we started losing our heads, got a couple cards. When you’re playing with a card, you can’t play as hard as normal. You have to play smarter. We had some guys come in and do a fantastic job. We just have to do a better job in the defensive third.”

Newton was outshot 9-6, 8-6 on goal. A.J. Howard had fives saves in goal for the Panthers, 6-5. Newton keeper Hervey Medina had six saves in goal.

Newton controlled possession for most of the first half, but Derby outshot Newton 6-4. A weak clearing pass by Newton was shot right back in by Derby’s Garrett Sackett.

Neither team took a shot for the first 20 minutes of the second half. Jose Moreno had a shot for the Railers that was snagged by Howard.

After Newton tied the game, Derby had a shot on a direct kick with two minutes remaining in regulation.

Derby scored on the first shot of overtime.

Newton drops to 6-5, 1-2 in AV-CTL I play. Newton plays at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Maize, a team the Railers beat 1-0 at the Titan Classic.

“We have Maize Thursday and Salina Central Tuesday, so the schedule does not lighten up,” Jantzi said. “We’ll have to recover tomorrow and be ready to play Thursday.”

JUNIOR VARSITY — The Newton JV downed Derby 1-0. Michael Velasquez scored for Newton in the second half.

Newton competes at 5 p.m. Thursday at Maize.
