WICHITA — The Newton High School girls’ golf team placed 10th out of 11 teams scoring Wednesday at the Wichita North Invitational at Sim Park.

Andover won the meet at 319, followed by Maize South at 370, Kapaun-Mt. Carmel at 375, Garden City at 390 and Andover Central at 392. Newton shot a 459.

Andover had the top three finishes led by Baylee Bloom at 74, Shauna Lee at 78 and Hayley Jones at 80.

Newton was led by Mallory Seirer at 102, followed by Mollee Ewert-Smith at 115, Naomi Kuhn at 119, Anna Harder at 123, Claire Preheim at 139 and Ada Montano at 148.

“We were missing some of our top players today, so our team score was higher for us today,” Newton coach Joanie Pauls said. “As a team, we really struggled on the par fives today. Mallory finished five strokes out of a medal, but was 13 over on the three par fives. She started with quadruple bogeys on three of her first four holes, but battled back nicely. Mollee and Naomi both improved from last year, each cutting over 10 strokes from last year's score at this meet. Naomi putted much better today and even won a medal for a proximity contest on hole 9 for longest made putt. Anna and Claire played in their first varsity meet and their first 18-hole meet. They have both improved their consistency and short game since the start of the season. Ada struggled with her ball striking today and gave away some strokes on the green.”

Newton competes today at the Hutchinson Invitational at Carey Park.
