The Newton High School volleyball team made it four titles in a row at the Newton Invitational Saturday at Ravenscroft and Willis gyms.

With just seven teams in the field this year, the tournament was played as a seven-team round robin. The Railers ran the table at 6-0 to win the tournament, followed by fifth-ranked (KVA, Class 4A-I) McPherson at 5-1, third-ranked (Class 4A-II) Andale at 4-2, Goddard Eisenhower at 3-3, Wichita Heights at 2-4, ninth-ranked (Class 4A-I) Andover Central at 1-5 and Salina South at 0-6.

The win was Newton’s second straight tourney win, after taking the Maize Invitational title last weekend. The Railers are on a 12-match winning streak.

Newton opened the day with a 25-23, 25-20 win over Wichita Heights. Newton downed McPherson 22-25, 25-20, 25-19. Newton downed Andover Central 25-18, 25-7. Newton downed Goddard Eisenhower 25-21, 25-23. Newton downed Salina South 25-9, 25-15. In the Railers’ final match, Newton topped Andale 25-16, 25-15 to clinch the title.

“I think Mac was the toughest match of the day,” said Newton senior Taylor Antonowich, who was named the tournament MVP. “We overcame that well. We picked up energy and were able to take that through the rest of the day. We gained a lot of energy in that match. When we played Andale, we needed to play tough. In that match, we started to have fun. Early in the day, we really weren’t having a lot of fun together. In that match, we started to started swinging with confidence and having a lot of fun.”

“We started playing like we did Tuesday,” said senior setter Kyndal Bacon. “After the break, we started playing a lot better. We were getting that perfect pass, and that helped us start hitting more. When we pass well, it makes it a lot easier to set. Everybody can hit, we just have to pass well, so we can put it down. Everybody was playing confident. The McPherson game was a little sloppy. We started picking it up. They are catch us on our heels a lot. They are a good team, but we pushed through.”

Bacon and Maggie Remsberg were both named to the all-tournament team. Caroline Barger was named an all-tournament honorable mention.

“I thought our morning was pretty tough,” Newton coach Jamie Dibbens said. “We had a target on our backs. A lot of teams were coming into the gym saying they want to beat Newton. They were giving us their best matches. All of the matches in the morning, we could have played better. If we pass well, we are so strong at the net and have so many options to set to. If our passing is on, we are hard to stop.”

Newton is 22-4 and plays at 5 p.m. today at Hutchinson in an Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I triangular with Hutchinson.

“We just have to keep doing what we’re doing, but keep improving,” Antonowich said. “We need to work on our serve receive. We need to work on our block. We need to play well together and have a lot of energy.”

“We need to start generating our own energy and not having a letdown,” Dibbens said. “We’ve had two tournaments that we’ve had a high on. We don’t want a let down going into league play. We’ve played Derby twice, but they haven’t been league matches. (Six-foot-5 Kennedy Brown) is pretty good in the middle. I think overall, if we play as well as we can — pass well, serve aggressive and hit aggressive — they can’t use her as much.”
