The Newton High School boys’ soccer team made quick work of the Goddard Lions Tuesday in non-league play, winning 7-0.
Newton had goals from six different players. Jose Rojas led with two goals. Andy Deckert and Sonny Ortiz each scored a goal with an assist. Edward Valdivia, Bruno Duran and Oscar Campos each added a goal. Gregor Hofmann dished out an assist.
Newton’s win marks a rebound from last week’s 4-1 loss to Goddard Eisenhower on the road.
“The guys came out with a lot of energy,” Newton coach Scott Jantzi said. “You could see it during warm-ups. There was a different vibe tonight. We were able to put things together. We were able to create a lot of opportunities in the first half. We were able to use our flanks more. We’re successful when we do that. We crossed the ball well. In the second half, we got away from that a little. Defensive-wise, we played really well. We communicated well. It was just a whole different vibe tonight.”
Newton outshot the Lions 17-3. Hervey Medina had three saves for the shutout win. Joel Ramirez took the loss for Goddard with seven saves.
Newton scored in the first minute on a Rojas goal from Deckert. The Railers added two more in the first 15 minutes of play from Ortiz and Deckert. Goals by Valdivia and Rojas put Newton up 5-0 at the half. The only shot Goddard took in the first half was off a direct kick.
Goddard had a scoring chance early in the second half Medina was able to stop.
Newton scored in the 53rd minute on a long shot by Duran. Campos converted a penalty kick in the 71st minute.
Newton improves to 4-3 and hosts Valley Center at 6:30 p.m. Thursday to mark the end of the first half of the season for the Railers. Valley Center is 2-2 after a 4-0 loss against Salina Central.
“It’s going to be a tougher match,” Jantzi said. “They are very organized. They are physical. It’s going to be a good game.”
