OLATHE — With just four gymnasts available, the Newton High School gymnastics team finished third at the five-team Olathe South Invitational.

Olathe South won at 93.5, followed by Emporia at 88.1 and Newton at 82.5

Newton’s Becca Meyer took second in the all-around competition at 30.95, followed by Thaw in third at 30.8.

Thaw won the vault in 8.7 and the uneven parallel bars at 7.25. Thaw was fourth in the floor exercises at 8.4.

Meyer was third on the bars at 6.95 and third on the beam at 7.75.

“We took four girls and had some individual improvement and some places,” Newton coach JoAnne Thaw said. “Unfortunately, we were short one on bars and we ended up third as a team. Although Becca stuck her beam and placed third, the other three had trouble staying on and that hurt our team score. We should be back to full strength on Saturday and hopefully see more improvement.”

Newton competes at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Shawnee Mission North Invitational at Shawnee Mission West High School.
