The Bethel College volleyball team snapped a 26-match losing streak in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference after a four-set win over York College Saturday afternoon in York.

Bethel won the match 27-25, 17-25, 25-20, 25-19.

The Threshers then returned home Monday and lost a three-setter to Bethany 25-12, 25-18, 25-14.

The win was the first conference win for first-year head coach Stacy Middleton.

The Threshers also snap a four-match losing streak overall after a 2-2 start to the season.

“We played really well on Saturday,” Middleton said. “I was super pleased with them. We changed the lineup a little and it worked really well. We adjusted well. Tonight, we just had a bad night. It was Monday.”

Against York, Bethel was led by Katie Neira with 16 kills, followed by Abby Kurtzer with 14. Kelsie Anderson set 24 assists, followed by Avery Myatt with 19. Rachel Bustillos served three aces. Five BC players were in double digits in digs — Taylor Buessing with 22, Bustillos with 19, Kurtzer with 15, Anderson with 14 and Myatt with 10. Bethel didn’t down a block in the match.

Molly Little led York with 12 kills. Makenzi Kissman set 20 assists, followed by Jolene Herzog with 14. Cassidy Wilson served two aces. Kelsey Taylor had 25 digs, followed by Natalie Cassasco with 16, Kissman with 15 and Herzog with 14. Wilson downed four blocks.

York falls to 1-13, 0-5 in KCAC play.

Against Bethany, Bethel fell behind 15-7 in the first set and never recovered. Bethel led 12-7 in the second set, but gave up a 7-0 run. Tied 14-14, Bethany made an 11-4 run. Tied 10-10 in the third set, Bethel gave up a 15-4 run.

Bethany was led by Azucena Duarte with 14 kills. Opal Drapeau set 14 assists. Conner Stolley served five aces and had 12 digs. Caitlin Boden downed three blocks.

For Bethel, Neira had five kills and served three aces. Anderson set eight assists. Bustillos had six digs. Kurtzer and Neira each downed two blocks.

“We struggled with our passes,” Middleton said. “Our serve receive was way off. That altered everything in our offense.”

Bethany improves to 2-11, 1-4 in KCAC play.

Bethel is 3-7, 1-4 in KCAC play. The Threshers Southwestern at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Winfield. Southwestern is 2-9, 0-5 in KCAC play.

“We need to regroup, have a good practice tomorrow and be ready to go on Wednesday,” Middleton said.
