HESSTON — The Newton High School girls’ golf team placed eighth out of 11 teams Friday at the Buhler Invitional at the Hesston Golf Course.

Wichita Trinity Academy won the meet at 322, followed by Andale at 361, Augusta at 398, Cheney at 416 and Concordia at 419. Newton had a team score of 459.

Hannat Hawks of Trinity Academy was top medalist with an even-par 71, two strokes better than Morgan Brasser of Andale.

Newton was led by Mallory Seirer with a 96 to claim the 10th-place medal.

“Mallory had her best two nine-hole scores of the year as she competed in her second 18-hole meet,” Newton coach Joanie Pauls said. “She broke 50 on both nines’s and finished in a tie for 10th (96), she won the score-card playoff for 10th medal. Our other scores were a little higher than our potential as we lost strokes with our short game, especially putting. For the rest of the girls this was their first 18-hole meet of the season and I think it was mentally tiring. We didn't finish our final holes as strong as we could have.”

Bryanna Walton shot a 120 for Newton, followed by Ada Montano at 121, Mollee Ewert-Smith at 122, Naomi Kuhn at 131 and Alondra Valle at 147.

Newton competes Monday at the Salina South Invitational at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.
