Goessel runners

compete at Bennington

BENNINGTON — The Goessel High School girls’ cross country team finished fourth out of five teams Thursday at the Bennington Invitational.

The Goessel boys were fifth out of six teams.

Complete meet results have not been received.

“The course was dry, dusty and the kids battle the heat as much as the competition,” Goessel coach Brian Lightner said. “Many of the Bluebirds handled the adversity very well and I am pleased with their ability to focus on their goals through out the race. … We had worked this week on pacing and running consistently throughout the race and the 'birds showed tremendous improvement in that area from a week ago at Hesston. Many runners slowed their first mile but their overall time dropped from a week ago. The way they responded to this challenge to start slower and run longer was encouraging and will pay off as we move in to the middle

part of our season.”

Goessel was led by Julia Nightengale, who finished 14th in 23:48.9 to claim a medal. Elyse Boden also claimed a medal, finishing 15th in 24:11.0.

Goessel competes Tuesday at the Marion Invitational at the Marion Country Club.
