After a pair of stinging losses to ranked teams in the Kansas City area, the Newton High School volleyball team took out its frustration Tuesday against Salina South and Campus in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play at Ravenscroft Gym.
Newton defeated Salina South 25-14, 25-12; and Campus 25-9, 25-14. Campus defeated Salina South 25-16, 23-25, 25-14.
“I was really happy with the way things went,” Newton coach Jamie Dibbens said. “I thought today might have been the first time we put the whole package together. We were swinging away and crushing the ball at the net. That can only happen if our pass is on. Tonight was the first night that we were consistently passing right to where Kyndal (Bacon) didn’t have to move. The other team didn’t know where we were going to set, and that’s when we are at our best.”
The Railers fell to DeSoto and Gardner-Edgerton last week, so Dibbens was pleased with the way the team rebounded.
“I think we learned a lot from that, so I’m happy,” Dibbens said. “If you have a loss, and you’re learning from it, it’s alright with me. We executed well tonight.”
Against Salina South, Maggie Remsberg led the Railers with eight kills. DesiRay Kernal and Taylor Antonowich had four each. Antonowich had 12 digs, followed by Kernal with five. Bacon had 20 assists.
Against Campus, Caroline Barger, Kernal, Antonowich and Remsberg each had five kills. Antonowich had 10 digs, followed by Bacon with nine. Bacon set 25 assists.
Newton improves to 9-3, 3-0 in AV-CTL I play. The Railers compete Saturday at the Maize Invitational.
Newton will face Maize South, Blue Valley West, Derby and one other team in pool play.
“I want to be able to take tonight’s emotion and energy into Saturday,” Dibbens said. “It all starts with the pass and being able to generate runs. Thursday, we would only serve once. Volleyball is so based on momentum. We need to have momentum on our side.”
