The Bethel College men’s soccer team posted its highest scoring game since 2012, stopping Manhattan Christian 6-0 Tuesday in non-conference play at Goering Field.

Bethel posted its first six-goal shutout since 2007. Bethel improves to 3-1, its best start since starting 3-0-1 in 2014.

Bethel has 11 goals this season, matching its entire offensive output in 17 games last season.

The Threshers jumped ahead 2-0 at the half. Midway in the second half, the Threshers scored four goals in a 16-minute span.

Chris Torres scored two goals with an assist to lead the Threshers. Jonas Tingberg and Joshua Clay each added a goal with an assist. Dante Texeira and David Fuentes each added a goal. Aaron Lundh dished two assists. Carlos Cornejo also had an assist.

Bethel outshot Manhattan Christian 20-4, 13-2 on goal. Albert Bratthammar had two saves in goal for the Threshers. Jacob Baldree had seven saves in goal for MCC.

The loss was the season opener for the Thunder, which finished as National Christian College Athletic Association regional champions and finished 0-2 at the NCCAA national tournament last season.

Bethel gets a week off and hosts Mid-America Christian at 5 p.m. Sept. 13. Mid-America Christian is 2-0 and has outscored its opponents 11-1.

CONFERENCE TEAM GOES TO NO. 1 — Defending Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference champion Oklahoma Wesleyan moved to the top spot on the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics men’s soccer top 25.

The Eagles are 3-0. All three wins are over top 25 competition. During the holiday weekend at the Baker Labor Day Classic OWU downed 17th-ranked Baker 1-0 and previously top-ranked and defending NAIA champions Hastings 1-0. OWU also has a 2-1 win over third-ranked Grand View. The Eagles went from no. 6 in the pre-season poll to the top spot this week.
