Smoky Valley 24, Halstead 22

LINDSBORG — A late Halstead comeback fell short in a 24-22 loss to Smoky Valley Friday in Central Kansas League play in Lindsborg.

The game was tied 16-16 at the half. The Vikings took the lead with 10:41 remaining on a one-yard Cort Elliott run. Tim Lambert ran in the two-point conversion.

Halstead scored with three minutes remaining on a 27-yard pass from Dalton Kraus to David Schulte. The two-point conversion run was stopped and Smoky Valley was able to hold on for the win.

Smoky Valley’s Brett Heitschmidt hit seven of nine passes for 127 yards and a touchdown. Kyle Annderson had 23 carries for 105 yards and a score. Lambert finished with three catches for 93 yards.

For Halstead, Schulte finished with eight carries for 109 yards, including an 82-yard touchdown run. Schulte had two catches for 45 yards. Dalton Kraus hit three of five passes for 52 yards. Taiten Winkle hit a 39-yard field goal with eight seconds left in the first half.

Dalton Kraus finished with 15 tackles for Halstead.

Halstead plays cross-county rival Hesston Friday in Hesston.

BROOKEVILLE — In the annual battle of the red birds, the Ell-Saline Cardinals defeated the Sedgwick Cardinals 31-21 Friday in Heart of America League play.

Nick Davenport rushed for 147 yards on 26 carries with three touchdowns. Bryce Lange had 23 carries for 121 yards and a touchdown.

For Sedgwick, Hooper Schroeder hit 17 of 31 passes for 259 yards and two touchdowns. Brayden Francis had six catches for 120 yards and a score. Kale Schroeder had five catches for 106 yards and a score.

Ell-Saline held a 286-81 rushing advantage.

Sedgwick hosts Sterling Friday.

MOUNDRIDGE — The Marion Warriors held off the Moundridge Wildcats 36-26 Friday in Heart of America League play in Moundridge.

Marion’s Corbin Wheeler rushed for 144 yards on 15 carries for three touchdowns. Jack Schneider added 160 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown. Chase Stringer rushed for 13 yards on seven carries with a touchdown.

For Moundridge, Mason Dyck hit 15 of 27 passes for 152 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Dyck added 19 carries for 61 yards and a score. Jerod Kaufman had 24 carries for 101 yards and a touchdown. Noah Eichelberger caught eight passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns.

Marion led 22-12 at the half. The two teams were even in scoring in the second half.

Moundridge plays Friday at Hutchinson Trinity.

Garden Plain 28, Hesston 24

HESSTON — Matt Pauly hit a 45-yard touchdown pass to Jared Becker with 2:56 to play, followed by a two-point conversion, to lift the Garden Plain Owls to a 28-24 win over the Hesston Swathers Friday in non-league play at Hesston.

The game was tied 6-6 at the half. Garden Plain led 14-12 after three quarters.

Hesston took the lead with 9:23 remaining in the game when Parker Roth scored from 14-yards out. Kaleb Snyder answered on a 28-yard touchdown run with 5:37 remaining.

Roth struck from 52 yards out with 3:37 remaining.

Hesston missed four extra-point attempts, a kick and three two-point conversions. Garedn Plain converted on two of four two-point conversions.

Hesston’s Cameron Cox hit 18 of 30 passes for 271 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Roth had 17 carries for 185 yards and three touchdowns. Reese Nebel had nine catches for 139 yards.

For Garden Plain, Nick Dooley had 17 rushed for 141 yards and a touchdown. Snyder had two carries for 91 yards and two touchdowns. Pauly hit four of nine passes for 104 yards.

Hesston lost two fumbles, while Garden Plain didn’t have a turnover.

Hesston hosts Halstead in a rivalry game Friday.
