Bethel players

take honors

WICHITA — Bethel College soccer players Kobi Russom and Kyla Williams were named the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s and women’s defensive players of the week respectively for the week ending Sunday.

In a 2-0 loss to Saint Gregory’s College, Williams had nine saves in 90 minutes of play. She had an 82 percent save percentage.

Williams is a freshman fron Clinton, Okla.

Russom, a junior from Iowa City, Iowa, had 11 saves in 110 minutes of play in a 1-0 overtime win over Saint Gregory’s. It was Russom’s fourth career shutout in goal for the Threshers.

McPHERSON — Bryant Soriano scored two goals to help lift the Bethel College men’s soccer team to a 4-2 win over Central Christian College Tuesday in non-conference play in McPherson.

Bryant scored in the fifth and 46th minutes. Bethel led 3-1 at the half.

Jonas Tingberg added a goal with an assist. Chris Torres also scored for the Threshers.

Lucas Braga and Joshua Taylor each scored for Central, 0-1. Jason Arias added an assist.

Bethel held a 16-11 advantage in total shots, 5-3 on goal. Albert Bratthmar had one save in goal for Bethel. Antonio Ramirez Villa had no saves in the first half for Central. Brian Silva had a save in the second half.

Bethel is 2-0 for the first time since 2014. The Threshers play at 7 p.m. Saturday at NCAA Division II Dallas Baptist.

Bethel women

fall at Central

McPHERSON — The Bethel College women’s soccer team gave up a pair of late goals to fall to Central Christian College 4-2 Tuesday in McPherson.

Rachel Meier scored two goals with an assist. Naime Barba added two goals for Central. Shannon Huesca and Kaitlyn Bevel each added an assist.

Kacie Torrens scored two goals for Bethel, the first of the season for the Threshers.

Bethel gave up two goals in the first 17 minutes of play, but tied the game 2-2 at the half. Central broke the tie with Meier goals in the 63rd and 86th minutes.

Bethel was outshot 32-7, 23-5 on goal.

Kyla Williams had 19 saves in goal for the Threshers. Goldie Bougher had three saves for Central, 1-0.

Bethel is 0-2 and plays Sunday at Stephens College in Columbia, Mo.

HILLSBORO — Miya Gonda scored a pair of goals to lead the Hesston College women’s soccer team to a 4-0 win over the Tabor College junior varsity Tuesday in Hillsboro.

Hesston scored three goals in the first half.

Miho Okuda scored a goal with an assist for the Larks. Connor Atkinson added a goal. Kenzie Johnson and Taylor Clark each added an assist.

Miranda Dolsman had one save in the first half. Vivi Rodriguez had two saves in the second half.

Hesston is 3-0 and plays at 5 p.m. Sept. 2 at Neosho County Community College.

Tabor JV

HESSTON — The Hesston College men’s soccer team claimed a 3-0 win over the Tabor junior varsity Tuesday at the HC soccer field.

Scoring details were not reported at deadline.

Hesston is 3-0 and plays at 7 p.m. Saturday in Chanute against Neosho County Community College.

Goessel sweeps

HAVEN — The Goessel High School volleyball team opened the season with three wins at a quadrangular Tuesday in Haven.

The Bluebirds topped Ell-Saline 25-9, 25-9; Haven 25-20, 25-16; and league rival Herington 25-7, 25-16 in a non-league match.

Goessel plays Tuesday at Peabody-Burns in a non-league match.

Wingnuts fall

to Cleburne

WICHITA — Cleburne Railroader pitcher Patrick Mincey held the Wichita Wingnuts to a run on five hits through eighth innings as Cleburne topped Wichita 2-1 in American Association play Tuesday night in Wichita.

Mincey (9-8) walked one. Winston Abreu walked two in the ninth for the save, his 23rd of the season.

Wichita starter Tim Brown (3-5) lasted 7 2-3 innings, allowing two runs on nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Josh Goossen-Brown finished the game, striking out one.

Cleburne scored in the sixth inning on a Geraldo Valentin RBI single with two outs. Laetten Galbraith added an RBI single with two outs in the top of the eighth inning.

Brennen Salgado hit a solo home run for Wichita to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning.

Wichita is 55-38, while Cleburne is 44-50.

Wichita drops to 2 1/2 games behind Winnipeg and two games behind Lincoln for the race for the top spot in the league. Wichita has five games remaining.

The two teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. today.
