claim medal

DERBY — The Newton High School girls’ golf team claimed a medal in the season opener Monday at the Derby Invitational at the Derby Golf and Country Club.

Andover won the team title with a score of 340, followed by Derby at 376, Mulvane at 410, Winfield at 416 and Arkansas City at 418. Newton took ninth in the 10-team field at 474.

Hayley Jones of Andover claimed the top medal with a seven-over par 78, winning a tie-breaker over Derby’s Kenni Henson.

Newton senior Kit Kingsley took fifth at 86 to claim a medal.

Freshman Mallory Seirer shot a 118 in her prep debut, followed by Naomi Kuhn at 134, Mollee Ewert-Smith at 136, Ada Montano at 142 and Bryanna Walton at 156.

Newton competes at the Salina Central Invitational Sept. 5 at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.

Bethel men

win opener

SHAWNEE, Okla. — Joshua Clay scored a goal in the 110th minute to lift the Bethel College men’s soccer team to a 1-0 overtime win over Saint Gregory’s Saturday in Shawnee.

One second remained on the clock when the winning goal scored.

The win was the first for new Bethel head coach Victor Garcia-Bebek. Bethel wins a season opener for the first time since 2014 and a season opener on the road for the first time since before 2007.

Shots were even at 13-13. Bethel held a 12-11 advantage in shots on goal.

Kobi Russom had 11 saves in goal for Bethel. Declan Simpson had 11 saves in goal for SGU, 0-1.

Bethel plays at 8 p.m. today at Central Christian in McPherson.

SHAWNEE – The Bethel College women’s soccer team opened the season with a 2-0 loss to Saint Gregory’s Saturday in Shawnee.

The Cavaliers scored in the 10th minute on a goal by Concepcion Laborin with an assist from Veronica Trujillo; and again in the 65th minute on a goal by Darcie Peasless with an assist from Hanna Arthur.

The loss mars the debut of Bethel coach Alex Hagen.

Bethel was outshot 20-9, 11-3 on goal. Mallory Adams had three saves in goal for SGU, 1-0. Kyla Williams had nine saves for Bethel.

HESSTON — The Hesston College men’s soccer team put goals in the net early and often to claim a pair of wins at home.

Friday, the Larks stopped the Bethany College junior varsity 8-1. Sunday, Hesston stopped Southwestern Adventist 4-1.

Against Bethany, Djay Taylor and Nadeem Jaber each scored two goals with an assist. Dawson McCawley and Sammy Rios each added a goal with an assist. Landon Baer and Cain Hernandez each added a goal. Javier Reyna, Ricardo Pineda, Anawin Boonprasert and Dalchi Kaminaga each added an assist.

Bryson White and Luke Hertzler each spent a half in goal. White had three saves in the first half. Hertzler had four saves in the second half.

Bethany’s stats were not posted.

Against Southwestern Adventist, McCawley had three goals. Hernandez added a goal on a penalty kick. Roe Russey had an assist.

White had three saves in goal for the Larks.

Hesston is 2-0 and hosts the Tabor JV at 7 p.m. today.

HESSTON — The Hesston College women’s soccer team claimed a pair of weekend wins to open the season.

Hesston downed the Ottawa University junior varsity 3-2 Friday in Ottawa and Southwestern Adventist 8-0 Sunday at Hesston.

Against Ottawa, Miya Gonda, Kassandra Ayala and Kenzie Johnson each scored a goal. Taylor Clark assisted on Johnson’s goal. Miranda Dolsman had four saves in goal in the first half. Vivi Rodriguez had six saves in the second half.

Hesston was outshot 12-7.

Against Southwestern Adventist, Miho Okuda scored two goals with two assists. Jenna Boller and Gonda each added two goals. Paige Baucom scored a goal with an assist. Ayala also scored a goal. Brielle Baucom had two assists. Connor Atkinson also had an assist.

Dolsman and Rodriguez each spent a half in goal. Rodriguez had a save.

Hesston plays the Tabor JV at 7 p.m. today in Hillsboro.

LAMAR, Colo. — The Hesston College volleyball team opened the season with a 1-3 finish at the Quiznos Classic Friday and Saturday in Lamar.

Hesston fell to Otero Junior College 25-16, 25-20, 21-25, 25-16.

Hesston lost to host Lamar in five sets — 25-16, 22-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-10.

Hesston beat Trinidad State in three sets — 25-20, 25-18, 25-17.

Hesston lost to Dodge City Community College 21-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-19.

Hesston’s stats were not reported.

The Larks host Neosho Community College at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

INMAN — The Moundridge Wildcat volleyball team took second Saturday at the Inman Invitational, while Sedgwick took third and Remington took fourth.

In pool play, Moundridge downed Hutchinson Central Christian 25-19, 25-14; Cedar Vale-Dexter 25-14, 25-17; and Remington 25-21, 26-24.

In the semifinals, Moundridge downed Sedgwick 25-19, 29-25, 25-20. In the finals, the Wildcats fell to rival Inman 25-21, 25-23.

Sedgwick downed Cunningham in pool play 25-16, 25-17; and Fairfield 25-17, 25-13; before falling to Inman 25-17, 14-25, 25-22.

In the semifinals, Sedgwick lost to Moundridge. In the third-place match, Sedgwick topped Remington 25-17, 25-15.

Remington downed Cedar Vale-Dexter 25-10, 25-16; and Central Christian 25-17, 25-17; before falling to Moundridge. Remington lost to Inman 25-16, 25-12 in the semifinals.

Moundridge plays today at Conway Springs with Hesston. Remington plays today at Flinthills with Eureka. Sedgwick hosts Leon Bluestem and Garden Plain Thursday.

NASHVILLE — With a pair of Newton High School grads entering their senior season, the Wichita State volleyball team opened the season with a 3-0 start at the LUV Invitational in Nashville.

The Shockers won all three matches in three sets.

Wichita State downed Lipscomb 28-26, 25-13, 27-25. Tabitha Brown led the Shockers with 11 kills. Newton grad Abbie Lehman had nine kills with six downed blocks. Newton grad Emily Hiebert had 32 assists, five digs and eight downed blocks.

Wichita State topped East Tennessee State 25-17, 25-16, 25-21. Brown had 15 kills, followed by Lehman with 10. Lehman downed five blocks. Hiebert served four aces with 32 assists, 14 digs and three downed blocks.

The Shockers then beat Belmont 25-20, 25-13, 25-23. Brown had 10 kills, followed by Lehman with eight. Hiebert set 26 assists with nine digs.

Wichita State plays this weekend at the IUPUI Hampton Invitational in Indianapolis. The Shockers will play IUPUI Friday and Marquette and Miami (Ohio) Saturday.
