With the regular seasons coming up, the Newton High School and middle schools football, soccer and volleyball teams held intra-squad scrimmages, while the remaining teams were introduced Friday night at Fischer Field and area gyms.

The Newton football team scrimmaged for about an hour, ending with special teams plays.

“We have a lot of work to do,” second-year Railer coach Chris Jaax said. “There are a lot of things the kids need to iron out. We were a little sloppy on special teams. The defense created quite a few turnovers, which is good for the defense. The offense turned it over too many times. We had some mistakes — dropped ball, missed blocks and false starts. The offense were able to get some momentum and had some nice place. The effort is improving, but we have some things to iron out.”

The Railers have a week before the season opener at home against Maize.

“We only had two weeks before this, so there’s still plenty of time to get better,” Jaax said. “I think we’re excited.”

The Railer soccer team also went for about an hour in preparation for Tuesday’s opener against McPherson. Coach Scott Jantzi tried to balance his squad for the scrimmage, but the white team outscored the black team 4-1.

“I saw good competition,” Jantzi said. “The teams were pretty even. The creativity was there. I was telling the guys we have some younger players who can step right in and we wouldn’t have a problem with them doing that. They are going to have to fight for their jobs. This is a talented team, senior loaded. If we can get our goalkeeper situation solidified. Hervey (Medina) went down in practice yesterday with an injury. I saw some good choices with the ball. The ball movement is what we’ve been teaching them.”

Jantzi said the team will scrimmage the alumni this morning and have a practice Monday before the opener.

The volleyball team will open the season today at the AV-CTL Pre-Season Classic at Hutchinson.

The cross country team opens the season Sept. 2 at the Manhattan Invitational. The girls’ tennis team opens the season Thursday at Hutchinson. The girls’ golf team opens the season Monday at Derby. The gymnastics team opens the season Sept. 7 at home against Emporia.
