Less than a month into his tenure as head coach and less than a week into training camp, Bethel College men’s soccer coach Victor Garcia-Bebek had reasons for optimism.

Despite a number of new players, the Threshers put things together early and posted a 4-0 win over Allen Community College in a pre-season friendly at Goering Field.

Enrique Trujillo and Chris Torres scored two goals each for Bethel. Jesus Alba had two assists, while Austin Cooper added an assist.

“We’ve been working a lot in these last five days of pre-season on possession,” Garcia-Bebek said. “We had to break through a very tight defense. Every time we got space through, we got through the defenders. We have some speed up top. That’s one of our strengths. Little by little, we started to take over. We finished the game with total domination.”

Possession was about 55-45 against the Threshers early in the game, but it turned to about 60-40 in Bethel’s favor in the second half. Bethel held a 10-4 advantage in total shots, but few of Allen’s shots had much on them. Kobi Russom and newcomer Albert Bratthmar each spent a half in goal for the shutout. Russom had two saves, while Bratthmar had one.

Bethel scored three goals in the first 20 minutes of play. All three came on long passes from the midfield to an open forward who ran onto the ball.

Bethel held a 6-3 advantage in shots in the first half.

Bethel scored on the first shot of the second half when Torres took a ball off the defender and knocked it in from about 20 yards out.

Allen had few possessions in the Bethel defensive third in the second half, held to one shot.

“We didn’t play always play like we need to, but for a team that was put together five days ago, I think things looked pretty good,” Garcia-Bebek said.

Bethel takes on sister school Hesston College in the “Old US 81 Derby” at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Goering Field and opens the regular season at 5 p.m. Saturday at Saint Gregory’s in Shawnee, Okla.
